Open Nuclear Network (ONN), PAX sapiens Austria programme, is an international non-profit organisation working to reduce the risk of nuclear conflict through open-source analysis, forecasting, and expert engagement. ONN’s flagship initiative, Project Loop, is a monthly monitoring and forecasting cycle that integrates open-source monitoring, structured foresight, and expert judgment to identify and assess pathways of nuclear escalation across key global regions. 



Primary Role:  
ONN is seeking two entry-level Assistant Analysts to join the Office for Monitoring and Assessment (OMA) and support Project Loop. 


 


The successful candidates will be responsible for systematic open-source monitoring of one or more assigned nuclear-risk regions and for producing monthly Monitoring & Assessment reports. These reports form the analytical foundation for the formulation of forecasting questions and subsequent expert forecasting by ONN’s external Expert Roster. 


  


This role is well-suited for recent graduates and early-career analysts with strong research skills, regional expertise, and an interest in nuclear risk, escalation dynamics, and applied forecasting.

The Hiring range for this position is: EUR 33,000.0044,000.00 


 


Location: 


The role will be based in our Vienna, Austria, office. PAX sapiens Austria, a recognized International Non-Governmental Organization, welcomes applicants from across the world and can issue work permits to successful candidates regardless of their nationality and immigration status.  


  


Primary Responsibilities: 



  • Conduct continuous OSINT monitoring of an assigned region relevant to nuclear risk and escalation. 



  • Track political, diplomatic, military, technological, and other strategic developments related to nuclear capabilities, signalling, doctrine, and escalation pathways. 



  • Systematically collect, evaluate, and synthesise open-source information from diverse sources (media, official statements, satellite imagery, expert commentary, and specialized databases). 



  • Produce monthly Monitoring & Assessment reports that: 



  • Identify key developments, trends, and anomalies; 



  • Assess potential escalation dynamics and nuclear-relevant risks; 



  • Highlight issues suitable for structured forecasting and expert judgment. 



  • Contribute to escalation pathway assessments and baseline analytical products used across Project Loop. 


Collaboration within Project Loop 



  • Work closely with colleagues in the Office for Foresight and Prediction (OFP) to support forecasting question development, baselines, and resolution criteria. 



  • Support coordination with ONN’s Expert Roster, including analytical inputs for forecasting workshops. 



  • Contribute, as needed, to briefing materials, internal discussions, and external engagement activities led by the Office for Engagement and Networks (OEN). 


 


Required Education, Knowledge, Skills and Competences: 



  • Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Security Studies, Political Science, Area Studies, Journalism or a related field. 



  • Demonstrated familiarity with at least one nuclear-relevant region (in priority order): 



  • Euro-Atlantic (NATO–Russia) 



  • Middle East (Iran–Israel) 



  • South Asia (India–Pakistan) 



  • Indo-Pacific (US–China) 



  • Korean Peninsula (DPRK) 



  • Strong research, analytical, and writing skills. 



  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet regular monthly deadlines. 



  • High level of diligence, attention to detail, and analytical rigor. 



  • Demonstrated ability to work in teams (e.g. cross-office collaboration, team project) 



  • Excellent written English. 



Desirable / Preferred Qualifications: 



  • Prior experience conducting OSINT research or monitoring. 



  • Familiarity with satellite imagery analysis or geospatial tools (a strong asset). 



  • Exposure to or interest in forecasting, foresight, or structured analytical techniques. 



  • Experience working with large volumes of information and synthesising them into concise analytical outputs. 



  • Additional language skills relevant to the regions of focus (particularly Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew and Russian are especially desirable) 



Physical Work Demands: 



  • Able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time. 



  • Able to bend at the waist and reach on a daily basis. 

  • Able to lift and move up to 25 lbs regularly.
