B1 lit. b (postdoc) Limited contract until: 12/31/2025Job ID: 2482About the research group:The research group 'Physics of Nanostructured Materials' (PNM) studies the fundamental physics of novel materials such as graphene and other 2D materials in the context of atomic-scale structural manipulation using electron and ion irradiation combining experimental materials physics, atomic-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, single-atom spectroscopy, and computational physics.Job description:The Kotakoski research group is looking for a motivated and talented individual to join the group as a postdoctoral researcher (part-time). The position offers an excellent opportunity to participate in leading the research field together with national and international collaborators as a member of an excellent team. The research project related to this position is the study of noble gas systems confined in the van der Waals gap between two 2D materials, including their creation and atomic-scale study with advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques and electron energy loss spectroscopy. The research project is a continuation of the work recently published in Nature Materials [DOI: 10.1038/s41563-023-01780-1].Key responsibilities:You actively participate in research, teaching & administration. Specifically:You are involved in research related to atomic-scale structural manipulation of low-dimensional materials using electron and ion irradiation combining experimental materials physics, atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, and in publishing the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.You will support doctoral students and other group members in their research involving experiments, data analysis and preparation of results for publication.You engage in teaching (independently and/or in a team) within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.You may occasionally be involved in the organization of meetings, conferences and symposiums.You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.Your qualifications: Completed doctoral degree in physics or a related field.Hands-on experience with atomic-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy and related methods, demonstrated through academic thesis or publications.Experience with similar materials (confined noble gas systems) is an advantage.Basic skills in scientific programming are expected, and good skills in Python and transmission electron microscopy image simulations are an advantage.Excellent command of written and spoken English (C1 Level or equivalent).Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Good communication skills and ability to present research findings effectively.Didactic experience is an advantage.Experience in postdoctoral research is an advantage.What we offer:Research project: We offer an attractive research project at the cutting-edge of the research field.Career perspective: This position is aimed at candidates who want to continue their academic career afterwards.
