Purpose

The VP, Global Medical Strategy Lead is a key senior business leadership role, reporting to the VP and Head of Vaccines Global Medical Affairs who is a key member of GSK’s Global Medical Leadership Team. The leader will have full responsibility for the Global Medical Strategy for an asset or portfolio of related assets in certain circumstances. The Global Medical Strategy Lead will lead the translation of our science to shape the practice of medicine and deliver positive health impact for patients by providing healthcare decision-makers around the world with the evidence and confidence they need on GSK therapies/Vaccines and influencing internal stakeholders with medical insight and expertise related to Development and Commercialization strategies. The role will be accountable for the Medical strategic direction of an Asset or Portfolio of assets and the matrix leadership of the Global Asset/Vaccine Medical L eadership Team, integrating innovative strategies that advance patient care. The role will partner with key markets to ensure that their insights are used to inform all evidence, asset/vaccine development and strategic deliverables as well as partnering across Commercial and R&D to deliver value for patients.

In addition to leading the Global Asset Medical Leadership team, the incumbent will be a member of several additional matrix teams including the Vaccine Development Team and the Vaccine Commercial Team where he or she will provide Medical insight and expertise to inform and influence evidence generation and scientific communication plans across the lifecycle to optimize patient impact within markets.

A key focus of the role is to develop and stretch self and team to be best in industry at delivering impact for patients and improving patient care paradigms. The leader must exemplify GSK values and leadership behaviors.

Responsibilities

Medical and Scientific Business Leadership

  • Maximise the positive impact for patients and GSK from early development to maturity (defined as no further significant clinical evidence generation).
  • Accountable for developing and delivering the Global medical product strategy which shape the practice of medicine and associated Global deliverables enabling prioritized LOCs to execute the strategy and deliver positive patient impact locally
  • Acting as a partner with the Vaccine Development Lead and Vaccines Commercialisation Lead, ensure integrated and thoughtful insights from across a diverse stakeholder set contribute to shaping the medicines/vaccine’s vision, development strategy and clinical development in the early phases of development, and for refining medical strategy as clinical evidence is generated.
  • Ensure that medical insights from key countries are used to inform all evidence, product development, and franchise strategy deliverables
  • Ensure that the evidence generation plan aligns to the IEP and maximizes the product competitiveness and addresses prioritized evidence gaps from launch through lifecycle management for key LOCs
  • Oversee asset budget to ensure that resources are deployed against the highest the highest impact tactics
  • Ensure that Global deliverables are produced on time based on market needs
  • Use a Global mindset, incorporating local perspectives, to strategy development and decision making. Work across different major markets to understand their needs and balance options to achieve the set-out goals.

  • Quickly adapt to unexpected external changes, understanding impact to strategy and ability to articulate implications for both R&D and commercial
  • Integrate and synthesize deep understanding of the end-to-end asset development processes, inclusive of commercialization and interconnectivities to deliver practice change and impact for patients

Qualifications

Basic:

  • Qualifications - MD/MBBS/PharmD or PhD in Vaccinology or Infectious Diseases
  • Scientific and Medical Knowledge - Experience of working within Vaccines Medical Affairs
  • Leadership - Experience in Medical Affairs as a therapy area lead in a major market and an asset lead role at the global level.
  • Medical Affairs - Asset launch experience, with design and execution of in country and above country strategies.
  • Clinical Development - Experience in the design, development, execution, statistical analysis, clinical interpretation and reporting of high-quality clinical studies.
  • Agility - Experience of assimilating information rapidly to identify critical questions that will drive decision-making and planning.
  • Strategic Thinking - Experience of carefully considering the issues and competing priorities within a situation, program or portfolio and then developing a strategy that includes the strategic application of available principles, tools, and systems.
  • Business Acumen - Experience of making decisions related to human, financial, material and information resources and using this knowledge to plan medical affairs strategy and resourcing.
  • Reimbursement/Market Access Knowledge - Experience of working closely with Value Evidence and Outcomes groups to support the payer value proposition.
  • People Development and Performance Management – Experience of building and maintaining a high performing team with appropriate performance management

Preferred:

  • Medical Doctor with experience of successful asset launches and lifecycle management within Vaccines Medical Affairs
  • Well-developed communication and influencing skills with the ability to distil complexity down to what matters most to our stakeholders .
  • Strong financial/budget and project management skills as well as business acumen.
  • Maintenance of high professional standards and adherence to internal and external codes of practice
