Main responsibilities:

• Develop barrier (coating) formulations for paper, board & molded fiber articles with focus on packaging applications.
• Provide technical support for existing barrier and barrier coating products
• Develop fundamental understanding of requirements and contributions of various coating components to overall coating performance
• Develop fundamental understanding of requirements and contributions for surface application of barrier coatings for fiber based articles, including print applied solutions
• Develop fundamental understanding of requirements and contributions of various components to overall barrier performance
• Propose and develop new barrier (coating) formulations from concept through scale up, working in a team environment
• Plan, conduct, and analyze data from laboratory experiments
• Work jointly with other team members and direct day-to-day activities of one or more technicians
• Close cooperation and coordination with the paper application teams
• Review patent and other literature in area of expertise
• Interact with marketing, applications, and commercial teams to develop commercial evaluation plans
• Participate in pilot and commercial coating trials as well as conducting testing at customer sites and trials
• Perform hazard reviews and maintain compliance with all lab safety requirements
• Document and present findings and recommendations to stakeholders

Qualifications:

• M.S or Ph.D. with polymer/bio-polymer focus preferred
• 3-10 years industrial research with a concentration in formulating coatings for paper or paint
• Barrier coatings or molded fiber experience preferred
• Exceptional candidates without industrial experience, but trained in polymer chemistry and paper/material science may be considered
• Expertise/fundamental knowledge in the areas of polymer chemistry, emulsion chemistry, coating formulations, or latex chemistries. Expertise in bio-based/bio-renewable technologies highly desirable.
• Fluent English skills; Dutch/German skills will be an asset
• Proficiency in MS Office tools
• Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
