GIS Expert

A GIS Specialist utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to analyze, interpret, and visualize spatial data for various applications. They support decision-making in fields such as urban planning, environmental management, and resource allocation by providing valuable geospatial insights.

The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to apply GIS analysis to projects, ensuring data accuracy and creating visual representations that inform strategic planning. GIS Specialists use specialized software to manipulate and analyze data, keeping databases updated and assisting colleagues with technical guidance.

Tasks

• Collect and organize geographic data from various sources, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and integrity.
• Create detailed maps and visual representations that effectively communicate geographic information for reports, presentations, and decision-making processes.
• Analyze spatial data to identify patterns, trends, and relationships that inform project objectives and outcomes.
• Utilize GIS software tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) to manipulate, model, and analyze spatial datasets.
• Maintain and update spatial databases to ensure they are current, accurate, and aligned with project requirements.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate GIS analysis into planning, development, and environmental projects.
• Provide technical support and training to colleagues on GIS software, tools, and best practices.
• Document methodologies and findings to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, Cartography, or a related field.
• Hands-on experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), including spatial data manipulation, map creation, and analysis.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex spatial data and identify meaningful patterns and trends.
• Attention to detail to ensure data accuracy, quality control, and proper data management practices.
• Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) to present findings clearly and collaborate effectively with teams and stakeholders.
• Problem-solving ability to identify challenges in data collection, analysis, or interpretation and develop practical solutions.
• Experience with geospatial data management and spatial database systems (e.g., PostGIS, SQL for GIS).

Nice to have/preferred skills and experience (not required)

• Proficiency in remote sensing, 3D modeling, or spatial statistics to enhance GIS analysis and visualization.
• Programming skills in languages like Python or R for automating tasks, analyzing data, and developing custom GIS tools.
• Experience managing GIS projects or familiarity with project management tools (e.g., Asana, Trello, MS Project) to coordinate tasks and meet deadlines.
• Hands-on experience with GPS devices or mobile GIS technologies for field data collection and real-time spatial analysis.
• Relevant GIS certifications such as GIS Professional (GISP), Esri Technical Certification, or other industry-recognized credentials.
