Join a mission-driven team where your expertise directly safeguards communities and the environment.

Why This Role Matters (Mission & Outcomes)

As a Senior Safety Engineer, you will be at the forefront of ensuring the safe operation and continuous improvement of nuclear facilities. Your work will directly influence the safety standards, regulatory compliance, and environmental responsibility of critical infrastructure. The stakes are high: your insights and leadership will help protect people, the environment, and the future of sustainable energy in Belgium.

About the Role

You will join the Safety, Security, and Environment department, contributing to periodic safety reviews and driving improvement actions for nuclear facilities. This freelance position is designed for a builder who thrives on ownership, precision, and impact. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, lead safety studies, and manage projects that set new benchmarks for safety and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement safety guidelines to drive continuous improvement in nuclear safety.

  • Prepare, supervise, execute, monitor, and verify safety studies for both new and existing facilities, ensuring compliance with regulatory and internal standards.

  • Lead project management for safety-specific initiatives, including ten-yearly reviews and stress tests, ensuring successful and timely delivery.

  • Conduct and/or oversee studies for licensing dossiers, supporting the approval of new facilities and modifications to existing ones.

  • Perform technical calculations and modeling to support safety analyses and provide actionable insights to other departments.

  • Develop and substantiate licensing dossiers for new facilities or decommissioning projects, ensuring all quality, safety, and environmental requirements are met.

  • Communicate technical advice and knowledge clearly and convincingly to diverse stakeholders, both internally and externally.

  • Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams, fostering a culture of safety, innovation, and continuous learning.

Technical Skills & Experience

  • Engineering degree (Civil, Mechanical, Nuclear, or related field).

  • Several years of experience in a nuclear company or similar high-stakes environment is a strong advantage.

  • Proven ability to design and control technical specifications and standards.

  • Experience planning and managing technical projects, including budget control.

  • Strong background in technical advice, project management, and risk analysis.

  • Hands-on experience with safety studies, licensing dossiers, and regulatory compliance in nuclear or comparable sectors.

  • Proficiency in performing technical calculations and modeling for safety and environmental analyses.

Mindset & Attributes

  • Builder mentality: driven by ownership, impact, and a passion for continuous improvement.

  • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.

  • Excellent communicator, able to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable advice.

  • Collaborative team player, comfortable working with diverse groups and stakeholders.

  • Proactive in seeking out new knowledge and staying ahead of industry best practices.

Language Proficiency

  • Strong command of technical English and French is required.
