About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Solution Architect (Freelance) for a 9-month engagement in Brussels, Belgium. You will join our client’s Digitalization & Innovation Unit, driving digital transformation across nature, forest, and environmental initiatives. Your architectural vision will shape the future of digital services and smart nature management, impacting citizens, partners, and field teams alike.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Designing and validating solution architectures that align with enterprise and reference architectures


• Translating complex business requirements into robust, future-proof IT solutions


• Defending architectural choices to both technical and non-technical stakeholders


• Collaborating with enterprise, data, and GIS architects, as well as experts in Business Analysis, DevOps, and Project Management


• Ensuring architectural coherence across multiple parallel projects and applications


• Developing and applying architectural tooling, including principles, standards, guardrails, and Architectural Decision Records (ADRs)


• Monitoring and guiding the implementation of solution architectures within the digital transformation programs: Digital Services and Smart Nature


• Applying modeling techniques (ArchiMate, TOGAF, UML, Sparx EA) to document and communicate architectural decisions


• Supporting project management aspects such as cost estimation, planning, and coordination

Technical Skills & Experience

• Demonstrable experience as a Solution Architect within complex IT environments (Senior level)


• Proven specialist architect experience in at least one domain: networking, security, server infrastructure, application architecture, ERP, ECM platforms, Data warehouse and BI, or as an Enterprise Architect (Senior level)


• Expertise in application, integration, and technology architecture (Senior level)


• Strong track record of translating business requirements into architecturally substantiated IT solutions (Senior level)


• Experience translating reference architectures and principles into concrete solution architectures (Senior level)


• Stakeholder management skills, with the ability to defend architectural choices to diverse audiences (Senior level)


• Proficiency in modeling techniques: ArchiMate, TOGAF, UML, Sparx EA


• Experience with cloud platforms, containerization, and CI/CD principles (Senior level preferred)


• Experience with GIS, geospatial data, or geospatial applications (Medior level preferred)


• Experience monitoring coherence between multiple parallel projects and applications (Senior level preferred)


• Experience developing and applying architectural tooling, including ADRs (Medior level preferred)


• Broad knowledge of business processes and project management aspects (costs, timing, coordination, planning, estimates)


• Comprehensive knowledge across all architecture domains, with deep expertise in at least one (infrastructure, application, security, data, process)

Language Proficiency

• Fluency in Dutch at European CEFR level C2 is required

Other Requirements

• Demonstrable experience with architectural modeling and documentation tools


• Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and agile environments


• Strong ownership mindset, with a focus on outcomes and impact
