Job Description - THESIS - Optimizing reliability, lifetime and power usage in LED displays

Job description

About Televic Rail:

With over 30 years of experience in designing, manufacturing and maintaining on-board communication and control systems, Televic Rail is a leading, trusted partner for railway operators and train builders worldwide. Its Passenger Information Systems and Control Systems are high quality, tailor-made solutions that offer the flexibility, user-friendliness and stability that our clients ask for. Our various types of on board control systems such as our bogie monitoring systems are innovative, yet reliable products designed specifically for the railway business. Trains and trams all around the world are equipped with Televic Rail solutions, from New Zealand to Canada, from China to the United States, from India to Belgium, England and France.

Your project:

Televic Rail offers solutions for passenger communication systems. One of these components are LED displays, which are usually mounted on the front and sides of the train and indicate the next stops and/or destination of the train. These LED displays have demanding requirements with respect to brightness and contrast, allowing them to be readable from far distances and under challenging conditions (like bright sunlight). In addition, these LED displays are used in harsh environments, like extreme low or high ambient temperatures.

As a result, multiple aspects need to be considered and optimized. In this thesis we want to evaluate some of the items listed below:

- depending on the content displayed some LEDs can be dimmed

- automatic brightness tuning (using camera) in the field to increase useful life

- Voltage tuning effect

- consider aging effects of LEDs

- getting temperature down, through better cooling or optimizing the circuits

- solutions to enhance contrast while keeping brightness low

- ....

It is the intention that we check the possibility to use AI tools to evaluate the above listed items.
