Job Description - Trainee - Drug Policy - Brussels

RAND Europe is an independent, not-for-profit research organisation whose mission is to help improve policy and decision-making through rigorous and independent research and analysis. We benefit the public interest through the impact and wide dissemination of over 200 projects per year. Our work at its most impactful changes policy, practice and process to the benefit of the public good. That is also our organisational mission

RAND Europe has approximately 200 staff across offices in Cambridge, Brussels, and the Hague. Our staff represents 22 nationalities, speaks over 20 languages and covers 31 academic disciplines. Our multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches to research generate unique perspectives and insights for our wide-ranging government, foundation and other NGO clients.

Our Brussels office hosts 11 members of staff and is primarily involved in research, business development and outreach for the EU institutions and other EU/European based organisations. The traineeship is designed to offer exposure to the various activities of a policy research institute. The assignment is an ideal transition for recent university graduates into the practical insights of policy research and policy making. This experience will provide valuable insights and useful contacts for your future career.

Responsibilities

You will be expected to support research staff in -

  • Coordinating research projects
  • Preparing research proposals (by drafting policy backgrounds on various topics)
  • Conducting desk research
  • Monitoring and reporting on policy debates
  • Organising and conducting interviews
  • Attending and reporting on workshops.
  • A keen interest in cannabis policy and broader drug policy research.
  • A Master's degree (or equivalent) and proven writing skills.
  • A familiarity with basic research principles and research methods.
  • Organised, willing to take initiative and a good team player.
  • Proficient in computer office applications (MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel.)
  • Fluency in English is essential.
  • Knowledge of EU policy making is desirable.

This role is suited to a recent graduate with an interest in gaining experience in drug policy research, although we equally welcome applicants with diverse work experience.

About the role

Duration: Six months (possibility for extension if approved by Brussels Formation)

Renumeration: €1,300 gross per month

Applicants must already have the right to work in Belgium.
