Job Description Summary
The Systems Engineering team provides Wind Turbine system expertise while leading development of new products, turbine RTS activities, and strategic projects. The team owns system level trade-off decisions and continuous improvement in product development processes for the Wind product portfolio.
As the Principal Engineer – Systems, Electrical & Grid, you will provide technical leadership, driving the strategy and execution of this specific technical area. This role contributes to the overall strategy for Systems Engineering, managing complex issues within this functional area of expertise.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
Guide the strategy for the Systems and Electrical teams on grid regulatory compliance and achieving self-certification in the US and global markets.
Lead the Systems and Electrical engineering teams throughout the design cycle in making complex technical decisions that are considered high risk or will have significant impact on product safety, quality, delivery, or cost.
Ensure the organization is properly leveraging all aspects past experiences, simulation capabilities, lab testing, active field testing, and fleet data evaluation to understand and accelerate product understanding.
Operate within the Engineering organization, in alignment with the office of the Chief Engineer.
Ensure simulation behavior for grid events is representative and understood for system-level impacts in loads, dynamics, and power quality.
Define and work with the team to implement control strategies to reduce faults relative to the electrical system.
Work with the fleet reliability team to interpret common problems into design improvements in NPI.
Develop/maintain associated design practices to continually improve the design/verification/validation process.
Provide design review support as either a reviewer or chair to overall wind engineering as appropriate for this area of expertise.
Review technical work for the team’s projects and mentor the technical teams.
Required Qualification
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Engineering or related Science fields
Experience in an engineering capacity, including prior Wind Turbine Systems Engineering experience
Considered an expert in Wind Turbine technology as demonstrated through prior successful wind turbine development
Strong problem identification and root cause analysis skills
Ability to break-down complex issues, determine possible courses of action, and enable effective decision making
Demonstrated ability to work across wind turbine systems
Proven ability to build relationships across a global matrixed organization
Desired Characteristics
Recognized as an expert in electrical engineering, power systems, simulation, validation, and system interactions
Demonstrated ability to document, plan, and lead knowledge technology enhancements
Knowledgeable about GE Wind Turbine design practices
Knowledgeable about 3rd party certification requirements
Conceptual design and system-level trade-off experience
