About the Team

ACCEL Schools is hiring a dedicated Student Tutor at Barber Preparatory Academy in Highland Park, MI for the upcoming school year. We are seeking an individual who is passionate about helping students strengthen their academic skills, build confidence, and reach their full potential.

Barber Preparatory Academy is a public charter school providing PK–8th grade students with a well-rounded education including community service learning and competitive sports. The school is known for its welcoming staff and faculty and its commitment to serving the Highland Park community. Barber Prep is part of ACCEL Schools, an established network of public charter schools serving K–12 students throughout the United States since 2014.

About the Opportunity

The Student Tutor will provide targeted academic support to students through individual and small-group instruction under the direction and supervision of certified instructional staff. Working closely with classroom teachers and school leadership, the Tutor will reinforce classroom learning, address identified skill gaps, and provide additional academic support based on individual student needs.

• Provide individualized and small-group tutoring to students based on identified academic needs


• Reinforce skills and concepts introduced through classroom instruction


• Support students in areas such as reading, literacy, writing, and mathematics


• Adapt tutoring activities and support strategies based on individual student needs, learning styles, and skill levels


• Work with school leadership to identify students who would benefit from additional academic support


• Monitor student understanding and progress during tutoring sessions and maintain accurate records of services provided


• Assist with tracking student growth and communicating progress to teachers and appropriate school staff


• Create a welcoming, supportive, and focused learning environment during tutoring sessions


• Maintain student confidentiality and handle student information appropriately


• Perform other duties as assigned

About You

• High school diploma or equivalent required


• Must meet Michigan Title I instructional paraprofessional requirements by meeting at least one of the following:




• Completion of at least 60 semester credit hours at an accredited institution of higher education; or


• An associate degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education; or


• Successful completion of a Michigan-approved paraprofessional assessment




• Previous experience tutoring, mentoring, teaching, or working with school-age children preferred


• Strong reading, writing, mathematics, and communication skills


• Ability to work effectively with students individually and in small groups


• Patient, encouraging, and able to build positive relationships with students


• Comfortable working with students with varying academic abilities and learning needs


• Ability to properly manage confidential student information


• Ability to pass federal and state criminal background checks


• Experience working with students in an urban school environment preferred
