About Us:

The Council for Advancement of African Canadians in Alberta (CAAC), operating as Africa Centre, was incorporated in 2006.

We are the largest pan African non-profit organization in western Canada, serving as a community hub that provides programs and services from a place of cultural awareness and competency to the families in our diverse community.

Africa Centre is committed to empowering older adults and seniors of African descent by enhancing their digital literacy, especially those facing language barriers. We aim to create an inclusive environment where all seniors can gain essential technology skills and improve their quality of life.

Contract Summary:
We are looking for a dedicated and empathetic Digital Skills Instructor to teach and support seniors with limited English proficiency in developing vital digital skills. The ideal candidate will be skilled in both technology and culturally responsive ESL teaching as well as fostering an encouraging learning atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Development: Design and adapt lesson plans that are culturally relevant and accessible, focusing on fundamental digital skills such as computer usage, internet browsing, online safety, and mobile device operation.

  • Language-Sensitive Instruction: Deliver classes in a way that accommodates language barriers, using visual aids, simplified language, and, when appropriate, translation tools to support understanding.

  • Hands-On Learning: Facilitate interactive and practical sessions that allow seniors to practice skills in a supportive environment.

  • One-on-One Support: Provide individualized assistance to seniors, helping them navigate technology and overcome specific challenges related to language and digital literacy.

  • Resource Creation: Develop visual aids, simplified instructional materials, and bilingual resources that can assist seniors in their learning process.

  • Community Outreach: Collaborate with local organizations and community centers to promote digital skills programs, ensuring they are accessible to seniors with language barriers.

  • Progress Assessment: Monitor and assess participants’ progress, offering constructive feedback and encouragement to help them build confidence and skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) with expertise in diverse learning environments, preferably as a retired teacher.

  • TESOL/CELTA/TEFL Certified (or pursuing certification), equipping you with skills to support English language learners with language barriers.

  • Experienced in teaching seniors and adapting to unique needs in community settings, particularly within culturally diverse groups.

  • Skilled in simplifying technology for beginner users, including creating visual aids and bilingual materials to enhance understanding.

  • Experienced in community engagement, collaborating with multicultural organizations and community centers to promote accessible learning opportunities.

  • Proficient in digital tools and platforms, including translation software, with practical knowledge of basic computer skills, mobile device operation, and online safety.

  • Culturally sensitive, patient, and adaptable approach to teaching, with a focus on inclusive and supportive classroom environments for seniors.

Schedule: Wednesdays and Thursdays between 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM; Total of 4 hours plus 1 hour of prep time.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary.

  • Opportunities for professional development with ECALA.

  • The chance to make a meaningful impact in the lives of seniors and older adults.
