Job Description - Elver Fisher

Location: Waycobah First Nation Community
Position: Elver Fisher


Position Type: Seasonal


 


Position Summary


We are seeking reliable, safety‑minded individuals to join our seasonal fisheries team as Elver Fishers. In this role, you will participate in the harvest, handling, and reporting of juvenile eels (elvers) during the annual spring fishery. This position supports community fisheries, conservation goals, and the sustainable management of a culturally and economically important species.


 


Key Responsibilities



  • Set, monitor, and retrieve elver fishing gear (dip nets, fyke nets, traps) in accordance with authorized methods and regulatory requirements.

  • Identify, handle, and collect elvers safely and carefully to maintain product quality.

  • Record accurate daily logs, including catch amounts, effort, bycatch, and environmental conditions.

  • Follow all DFO and community fisheries regulations related to gear, quotas, reporting, and safety.

  • Maintain fishing equipment, ensuring nets, traps, and lights remain in good working order.

  • Participate in catch weigh‑ups and hand‑offs with licensed buyers or band fisheries staff.

  • Work safely at night, often in wet, cold, or unpredictable weather conditions.

  • Respect environmental and cultural values, including habitat protection and species conservation.


 


Qualifications & Requirements



  • Must be 18+ (or minimum legal age for the fishery).

  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and long hours during peak harvest times.

  • Capable of working in outdoor, physically demanding conditions.

  • Strong attention to detail for data recording and regulatory compliance.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Reliable transportation to and from fishing sites.

  • Previous fishing or outdoor work experience is an asset, but not required.

  • Must follow all community, commercial, and safety protocols.


 


Assets (Not Required)



  • Previous elver fishing experience.

  • Knowledge of local waterways and seasonal conditions.

  • First Aid / WHMIS / Marine safety training.

  • Familiarity with community fisheries policies and conservation measures.


 


Working Conditions



  • Standing for long periods; lifting up to 40 lbs.

  • Exposure to cold water, slippery terrain, and nighttime operations.

  • Seasonal employment typically from March–May, depending on conditions and regulations.


 


Compensation



  • Competitive seasonal wages or catch‑share system (based on community program).

  • Training provided.

  • Safety equipment supplied (or reimbursed), depending on program.
