Summary of Position

Abalone Construction is a privately owned company with over 40 years specializing in Industrial and Commercial civil construction. We offer construction services in a variety of markets including Infrastructure, Roadbuilding, and Land Development.

Reporting to the foreman, Gradesman are an integral member of field operations, responsible for providing support on our projects.

Role and Responsibilities

Use of grade and pipe lasers to establish correct grade for road, trenches, ditches and / or piping

Read plans and be mathematically inclined to accurately complete functions of the position

Work off survey stakes as required for layout purposes for both surface & drainage grading

Layout to support culvert / pipe / pre-cast installation & support with the installation

Must be willing and able to learn general construction practices involving both surface and underground grading civil work

Guide equipment to support final grading and setting of structures

Rigging to support offloading and placement / installation of materials

Read grade on a level and ensure pipe / pre-cast structures installed with proper grade

Perform general labourer duties as required

Qualifications, Training and Education

Minimum 3 to 5 years working in civil construction preferably as a labourer or gradesman

Experience with:

• grades in relation to piping, earthworks and surface drainage


• Pipe installation, precast manhole and vault installation

Ability to work in a team environment

Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to multitask and meet deadlines

Must be hard working, have a positive attitude and a willingness to learn

Must have valid CSTS-2020, WHMIS 2015, Ground Disturbance and CSA approved 8” steel toe work boots

Must possess a valid class 5 driver’s license

Working Conditions

The position will be working outside in all weather conditions. They must be able to spend long periods of time sitting in a vehicle, or walking/standing on the job site.  They must be willing to commit to 50 + hours per week at various project locations. Typical shifts are 7:00am - 5:30pm.
