Head Cook (Term)

Job Type: Term until April 2026 - Full-Time (Monday to Friday)

Pay: $47,237

About the Role

The Head Cook & Team Lead at Alpha House is responsible for leadership in a commercial kitchen that feeds approximately 100 individuals (Detox clients, housing clients and staff) on a daily basis. Menu planning, budgeting, staff supervision and Health and safety are key responsibilities of the Head Cook. Your duties would include:

• Ensuring compliance with health regulations


• Provides training, supervision and first level disciplinary action (verbal warnings and documented conversations) to the Kitchen staff


• Responsible for hiring kitchen staff as well as writing and conducting performance reviews of Kitchen staff, and when necessary making recommendations regarding probation extensions or terminations


• Menu planning based on items obtained from the food bank


• Preparing and overseeing the preparation of meals and soups for the day


• Supervising clean up and assisting as required


• Managing the food budget, inventory and waste control


• Assisting with serving detox clients and staff


• Assisting in receiving inventory, donations, etc.


• Occasional prep for special occasions, such as the AGM, special event BBQs, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.


• Cleaning equipment and workstations


• Other duties as required

About You:

• Completion at minimum, of a two year culinary arts program


• At least 5 years cooking experience, three of which were in a leadership position


• Experienced in preparing large “one dish” meals typically used for off-site clients


• A passion for making soups (for the homeless)


• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (non-GDL) required


• Experience working with vulnerable populations as well as volunteers is required


• Must be able to pass a criminal record check and vulnerable sector search


• Able to make sound judgments requiring confidentiality, tact and diplomacy within tight deadlines


• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs throughout the course of the day


• Must be willing to work a three week rotating shift of 7 am – 3 pm and 10 am – 6 pm
