About Vertex Estimating
Vertex Estimating provides industry-leading cost certainty and strategic consulting for complex infrastructure and energy projects. As we continue to support critical energy infrastructure across Western Canada, we are seeking a highly skilled Senior Estimator(s) to join our team in a pivotal contract capacity.
OVERVIEW
Vertex is currently accepting applications for an Independent Contractor -Senior Estimator. We are looking for a seasoned professional to lead estimating efforts for major energy projects. This is not just a support role; it is a key position within a project lifecycle. You will be responsible for developing accurate, high-level cost estimates that drive decision-making for large-scale facility developments in the industrial marketplace.
The estimator’s primary function is to provide project estimating for projects in engineering development ranging from small to large size projects.
The ideal candidate will utilize previous experience and formal training to ensure compliance to Vertex’s Safety, Health and Environmental, Quality Control and administrative Management Systems. The Senior Estimator will interpret preliminary engineering information and prepare detailed estimates.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) or Certified Engineering Technologist (MET/CET) or equivalent is an asset
Minimum of 20 years of estimating experience in the industrial work environment
Minimum of 10 years of Western Canadian energy project experience with a proven track record on facility projects.
Experience in multi-disciplinary estimates.
Prior experience working for industrial general contractors considered an asset.
Ability to take material takeoffs generated by engineering and produce final estimates.
Ability to read, interpret and understand construction drawings and documents
Expert-level proficiency with WinEstimator is mandatory.
Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel and Word).
Able to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities and successfully meet deadlines
Strong organizational, planning, and detail oriented
Strong customer service and relationship building skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Able to work in a team environment
RESPONSIBILITIES
Ability to prepare Class 5, 4 and 3 project estimates as defined by AACE International.
Ability to prepare accurate project estimates based on preliminary engineering.
Ability to take material take-offs prepared by engineering and generate a detailed total cost estimate including field construction hours for the project.
Able to estimate both “green field” and “brown field” project
Able to assess the complexity of the project and estimate the field construction hours.
Using your industry experience, able to identify missing scope of work and prepare material take-offs to complete the estimate or include applicable allowances.
Understanding of the various construction unions in the Western Canada provinces.
Proven track record of interacting with project owners and their engineering consultants on the project.
Able to estimate both direct and indirect construction costs on a project.
Has a network of subcontractors and suppliers in the marketplace that they can rely upon for updated market pricing.
Review available technical specifications and drawings to assist in determining the estimated cost for projects.
Prepare and summit clarification requests to the Client during the estimating phase.
Able to review estimates and supplier quotations for accuracy and completeness.
Collaborate with peers while preparing estimates.
Attend estimate review meetings to present the estimate, both internally and externally. Answer any questions that may arise.
Perform other related duties as assigned

Our ideal location for this position is to be based out of our Sherwood Park office. We are also accepting candidates who reside in Calgary and will consider remote locations.
