Job Description - Labourers

Brazeau County is currently hiring temporary Labourers to join our Public Works Maintenance team for the summer months. This position offers four months of employment from May to August, with a great work life balance of evenings and most weekends off, including paid statutory holidays. Our summer staff work forty hours per week, receive job and safety training, and are provided with personal protective equipment.



If you enjoy working outside and being kept physically busy all day this may be a great fit for you. Our labourers work in a team environment with minimal supervision. Your day will bring you a variety work throughout our County areas. You must have a valid driver’s license, follow directions well, and be hands on with tools and light equipment. You are comfortable to learn and operate light equipment, flexible to work with our maintenance crews, and have great attitude to do a job well.



RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Performs general labour including brushing, fencing, debris removal, painting, trenching, pipeline exposure, sign placement and repair, and culvert maintenance.

  • Crack sealing on paved roads within the County during summer season.

  • Flagging as required.

  • Clean and maintain vehicle and tools as required.

  • Provides labour to other departments as needed with supervisor direction

  • To undertake any other reasonable duty, commensurate with the classification and responsibility of the position, across the department in order to meet service priorities and business continuity requirements.

  • May be required in the event of a municipal emergency to support the emergency operations centre and incident action/recovery plan.



COMPETENCY AREAS:


Education/Training:



  • Currently pursuing post-secondary education is considered an asset.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.



Licenses/Certifications/Designation:



  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License

  • Clean Driver’s Abstract



Experiences/Knowledge/Skills:



  • Must be 18 years of age or older

  • Experience and knowledge of mowing equipment operation

  • Ability to perform physical labour

  • Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision

  • Familiarity and experience with light equipment is an asset

  • Effective communication skills and ability to interact with many different individuals in a professional manner

  • Ability to follow precise instructions

  • Computer software experience using GIS/GPS and web-based reporting programs

  • Overtime and weekend work will be required when necessary.

  • Successful candidate must be able to work for the entire period of the position.



Compensation and Classification: 



  • Temporary (Maximum Five Months Duration)

  • Work Period from May to August

  • Forty Hours Per Week; Monday to Friday

  • Union Grid 1 $23.38 to $27.30 per hour

  • Non-supervisory
