Job Description - Mechanical Designer (12 Month Mat Leave)

The Mechanical Designer position is responsible for developing, designing, and detailing mechanical components, assemblies, and systems. This role supports engineering and manufacturing by producing accurate technical drawings and design documentation while ensuring compliance with specifications, standards, and project requirements.



This is a temporary contract position to provide coverage for an employee on a 12-month maternity leave.



WHAT YOU WILL DO:




  • Prepare concept, design, and production drawings with supporting calculations and material data, ensuring designs meet specification requirements and manufacturing capabilities

  • Develop 2D drawings and of mechanical components and assemblies

  • Produce detailed manufacturing, assembly, and shop drawings for production

  • Interpret engineering sketches, calculations, and design requirements

  • Modify and update existing designs as required

  • Produce Bills of Materials (BOMs) and material requisitions

  • Develop technical documentation required to support projects

  • Ensure drawings comply with applicable standards, specifications, and company procedures

  • Collaborate with engineering, production, and other departments

  • Interface with customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders to define project scope, requirements, deliverables, budgets, and schedules

  • Assist in preparing cost estimates and sourcing materials or components

  • Perform site visits to validate project requirements and assess existing equipment or systems

  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical input

  • Maintain accurate design records and documentation

  • Support troubleshooting, testing, and continuous improvement initiatives



  • Safety Specific:





    • Ensure compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) regulations and company safety policies and procedures

    • Adhere to the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required for the role

    • Participate in safety training, including regular emergency drills

    • Follow all guidelines for the safe operation of tools, machinery, and vehicles

    • Report all incidents, accidents, and near misses immediately

    • Actively look for and report potential hazards in the workplace

    • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, free of potential hazards

    • Practice proper ergonomics to prevent strain injuries

    • Adhere to office safety procedures, including emergency evacuation routes, fire drills, and building safety protocols





  • Other duties as assigned



WHAT YOU NEED:




  • Post-secondary degree in Mechanical or Structural (Civil) Engineering

  • 3–5 years of experience in mechanical design, preferably with heavy industrial equipment or overhead crane experience

  • Proficiency in AutoCad is required

  • SolidWorks experience or any other 3D modeling software will be considered an asset

  • Experience designing machine-welded assemblies and structural components is an asset

  • Knowledge of CSA S16 and CMAA specifications is an asset

  • Proficiency with office software (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and manufacturing processes

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and judgment skills

  • Effective communication, teamwork, and ability to work in cross-functional teams

  • Ability to manage priorities and handle multiple projects concurrently
