Job Title: Aboriginal Fishery Guardian, Seasonal Position, up to 15 weeks

Location of Position. Two positions for Western NL, Bay of Islands.

Hours of Work: Days, Evenings, Weekends, based on 35 hrs/week.

Rate of Pay: $22.58.18/Hr. plus 6% Vacation pay, paid bi-weekly.

Job Description:
Reporting to the Manager of Fisheries and Enforcement, The Guardians will be responsible for completing daily patrols, conducting environmental monitoring and research activities throughout their posting in Newfoundland.

Responsibilities:

 Guardians are responsible for completing daily patrols as well as doing joint patrols with approved organizations as assigned. Guardians will assist in completing projects and any other projects or activities not included on this list as approved by Qalipu Natural Resources Director.

The Guardians will work with an assigned partner to conduct monitoring and research activities throughout their posting in Newfoundland. This is a field position. This position will include the following:

• Providing a visible presence on traditional Qalipu territory.


• Observing, recording, reporting on any obstruction of migratory routes, deposits of deleterious substances, or any harmful alteration, disruption, or destruction of natural habitat.


• Observation of illegal activities, with appropriate reporting of the situation to the appropriate authorities.


• Taking detailed notes and preparing an orderly documentation of information related to activities on the land.


• Making decisions in determining appropriate course of action under the circumstances including whether or not it is safe to approach observed violators.


• Preparing reports and patrol logs as required.


• Responding to inquiries from the public


• Providing support for research projects conducted by Qalipu Environment and Natural Resources or other approved partner organisations.


• Conducting monitoring activities and inspections of natural habitat and data collection for various biological studies conducted by Qalipu Environment & Natural Resources or other approved partner organisations.


• Emergency response.


• Patrols by vehicle, ATV, or foot during the day.


• Operating boats, outboard motors, and ATVs.


• Maintain detailed daily logs.


• Maintaining assigned equipment.


• Gathering and application of Indigenous teachings, and knowledge.


• Maintenance and support of Indigenous relationships with lands, waters, animals, and plants


• Capacity building, outreach, education and training of Indigenous youth, tourists, and community members.


• Data collection and monitoring related to the use of lands, waters and other earthly gifts on traditional territories, including cultural sites.


• Species and habitat identification, monitoring, and protection.


• Habitat stewardship for maintenance and improvement of ecosystem services.


• Conservation, land use and land relationship planning.


• Enforcement and compliance support through observation, recording, and reporting.


• Promoting public awareness and public assistance through participation in public awareness and education programs geared towards conservation of the natural environment.


• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Education:

• Post secondary training in Fish & Wildlife, Environmental Studies, Enforcement or equivalent. Applicants lacking the desired training, but with significant experience in this type of field are encouraged to apply with a one page written professional reference outlining the suitability of the applicant for this position


• Valid First Aid certification


• Valid Class 5 Drivers License


• GPS proficiency


• Valid Pleasure Craft Operators card


• Ability to work independently and unsupervised


• Excellent oral and written communication skills


• Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite of programs

Experience:

• Experience working in remote field locations including the use of small boats, ATV’s, etc.


• Local Knowledge of the location referenced in this competition.

Working Conditions: Guardians must be able to work early mornings and late evenings with activities including walking/hiking in all weather conditions, as well as be comfortable with travelling in different methods (ATV, boat, etc.). Employees must also be willing to contribute to the study and handling of various marine and terrestrial species.

This is a remote, field-based position that includes work on and around bodies of water and in forested areas.  Duties may include strenuous physical activity and may need to be conducted in adverse weather conditions.  A flexible schedule will be required to effectively deliver enforcement and research duties. Access to a reliable vehicle capable of accessing unpaved access roads is required.
