About the AFN


The AFN is an advocacy organization that takes direction and fulfills mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions. As a national advocacy organization for First Nations, the AFN seeks to advance First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through the development of policy, public education, and where applicable, the co-development of legislation to build First Nations capacity.





The AFN was created out of a desire among First Nations leadership for a strong and effective collective advocacy organization. From this, values such as respect for human rights, diversity, justice, and the sovereignty of each rights-holding First Nation guide the work of the organization.





Position Overview 


The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is seeking a seasoned and visionary leader to serve as the Senior Director of the Social Branch. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Senior Director will oversee the strategic planning, development, and implementation of initiatives that support the social programming, education, languages, health, and community well-being of First Nations.





The Senior Director will provide leadership to the Director of Languages and Learning, the Director of Children, Families, and Social Development, and the Director of Health. This role requires strong collaboration with internal sectors, First Nations leadership, government entities, and other partners to ensure AFN’s social branch priorities are advanced in alignment with the aspirations of First Nations communities.





Key Responsibilities





Strategic Leadership



  • Provide vision and oversight for AFN’s social branch priorities, including health, children and families, languages and learning, and related policy areas. 



  • Align initiatives with First Nations priorities and AFN’s strategic direction. 





Team and Operational Oversight



  • Lead, support, and develop a team of directors and staff. 



  • Oversee work planning, budgets, and reporting to ensure accountability and program success. 





Policy and Advocacy



  • Develop and advocate for national policies and initiatives that advance First Nations social development, representing AFN in high-level meetings with federal partners, collaborators, and communities. 



  • Ensure that policies are culturally relevant and responsive to the needs of First Nations. 





Engagement and Relationship Management



  • Build and maintain strong, respectful relationships with First Nations communities, organizations, and leaders. 



  • Facilitate meaningful engagement and incorporate diverse perspectives into AFN’s work. 





Research and Analysis



  • Oversee research and policy development that informs recommendations and advocacy. 



  • Ensure approaches are evidence-based and reflect First Nations values and perspectives. 





Reporting and Accountability



  • Prepare strategic reports and updates for the AFN Executive Committee and Chiefs-in-Assembly. 



  • Ensure transparency, accountability, and alignment with AFN resolutions and mandates. 





Other duties as assigned. 





Requirements





Education & Experience: 



  • Bachelor's degree in social policy, Public Administration, Indigenous Studies, Health, Education, or a related field. A master's degree is considered an asset. 



  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in social development, health, education, or related fields, with at least 5 years in a leadership role preferred. 



  • Demonstrated experience working with First Nations governments, organizations, or communities. 



  • Proven track record of developing  FIrst Nations policies 





Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 



  • In-depth understanding of First Nations social, cultural, and governance contexts. 



  • Strong knowledge of federal, provincial, and territorial policies and programs related to health, social development, and education. 



  • Exceptional leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and guide directors and staff. 



  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage effectively with diverse partners. 



  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. 



  • Proficiency in project management, budgeting, and performance measurement. 



  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment. 




Working Conditions 



  • Primarily office-based in Ottawa, with frequent travel for meetings, community engagements, and events. 



  • Availability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, as necessary to meet organizational needs. 



  • Ability to handle high-pressure situations and adapt to changing circumstances. 




Physical and Mental Demands 



  • Prolonged periods of sitting and computer use. 



  • Capacity to manage complex and sensitive issues with professionalism, discretion, and cultural sensitivity. 



  • Emotional resilience and the ability to navigate politically sensitive environments.
