Job Description - PARALGL % - Paralegal

Become an integral part of BC’s legal service

The Ministry of Attorney General (AG) is responsible for ensuring that the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with the law. The Legal Services Branch (LSB) supports the AG in fulfilling this mandate by serving as legal advisor to government in civil law matters. LSB’s clients include Cabinet, government ministries, and public agencies.

The Labour, Employment, and Human Rights (LEHR) subgroup within the Vancouver Group, LSB, AG, is hiring a paralegal. The successful candidate will work closely with legal counsel providing legal services to government clients, including a variety of ministries and the Public Service Agency, on LEHR matters.

The duties of a paralegal in the LEHR subgroup include:

• Providing general paralegal support to legal counsel, particularly to legal counsel representing government respondents in human rights complaint proceedings under the BC Human Rights Code, labour grievances under collective agreements, and employment civil claims.
• Gathering documents, reviewing documents for relevance and privilege, and preparing lists of documents for document production in LEHR proceedings.
• Helping legal counsel with legal research, drafting, correspondence, witness interviews, and mediation and hearing preparation on LEHR files.

Job Requirements:

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
  • Completion of a paralegal certificate, paralegal diploma, or analogous degree from a recognized institution. (A law degree may be considered as an equivalent to a paralegal certificate).
  • Experience with significant file management of large, complex, and document heavy legal files.
  • Experience using legal software tools and techniques like Adobe Acrobat, MS Office, FTK, and Legal Files (or analogous timekeeping, reporting and document management software).

Preference may be given to those with:

  • Recent and relevant experience working as a paralegal in the area of labour, employment, human rights, or an analogous area of law.
  • Training and/or related experience in a Canadian Jurisdiction.
  • Recent and relevant experience working as a paralegal in a Canadian federal or provincial government.
  • More experience than the minimum job requirements listed above under the Education and Experience heading.
