About The Role Brookfield Renewable Canada is seeking a Project Engineer to support and coordinate the key technical aspects of Large Scale Energy Storage Projects, across all stages of development through construction and handover to operations. The Project Engineer will play a key role as the technical lead of the project and is expected to be physically on the construction site (near Ottawa) as required during construction. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in renewable energy projects, particularly in battery storage projects and experience on major Power projects (renewables, HV substations, transmission lines, 50M$+) with expedited schedules. The ideal profile has strong technical, organizational, project management and communication skills. Reporting the Senior Project Manager, the Project Engineer will work closely with other groups and leads from Development, Procurement, Operations, Finance, External Affairs, external EPC firms and contractors, and other internal/external stakeholders to support the interconnection screening and application process, engineering and design, procurement, execution, construction, and commissioning of new power generation and storage facilities. We are looking for a technical anchor, that will take pride in going in the details on various technical topics, understand them, solve the issues and communicate proficiently. Key Responsibilities
  • HSE and ESG: Represent and own the strong HSE culture at Brookfield Renewable Canada by ensuring Health & Safety and Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) requirements by the Owner are met.
  • Technical: With support from third party Owner’s Engineer and internal technical resources:
  • lead the interconnection screening and application processes with system operators and transmission owners
  • lead the progression of engineering and design from concept to constuction deliverables,
  • support the equipment specification and selection,
  • monitor quality and compliance throughout the project.
  • accountable for QA/QC, commissioning planning and execution.
  • Procurement: Support the procurement effort, namely for the EPC, OEM and Major Components contracts in order to maximize value for Brookfield Renewable Canada and control the risks. Experience with the procurement of batteries, inverters, Main Power Transformer (230kV), HV Breaker and EPC contracts considered an upside.
  • Permitting and Regulatory: Coordinate with other parties to obtain and ensure compliance for all the permits required to build the projects.
  • Project Management: Support the Senior Project Manager with delegated tasks. Manage Owner’s engineer and other consultants mandates, scope and budget proficiently.
Knowledge And Experience Required
  • Think like an Owner: We are looking for a seasoned Project Engineer that will think like an owner and will proactively find creative solutions to solve problems and take ownership of the projects and related tasks, keeping in mind value preservation and creation at all times.
  • Hold a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, and preferably be a member of the Professional Engineers Ontario and/or the Order of Engineers of Quebec, or an equivalent Canadian association;
  • Hold at least five (5) years of full-time technical work experience in renewable energy or a related field;
  • Knowledge of the electrical transmission & distribution systems and integration of renewables;
  • Experience with HONI and IESO on connecting new asset to the Ontario grid is a plus.
  • Knowledge of battery energy storage systems;
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards
  • Knowledge of electrical system studies including but not limited to load flow, arc flash, grounding, short circuit, harmonics, relay coordination, and protection and controls
  • Experience designing AC collection systems, high voltage substations and transmission infrastructure considered an upside
  • Knowledge of DC electrical systems and advanced power electronics
  • Knowledge of hydroelectric, wind, solar energy production processes gained through operations, development, or engineering considered an upside
  • Proven project management or coordination skills;
  • Working knowledge of Ontario-based HSE regulations and contract and legal agreement language, specifically pertaining to equipment supply, professional services, and project construction
  • Ability to coordinate a team of independent engineers;
  • Effective organizational skills, including the ability to identify priorities and plan work independently while managing competing deadlines;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and maintain positive interpersonal relationships;
  • Bilingualism is an asset;
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral, in English and, if possible, in French;
  • Excellent computer skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
