Job Overview:

Merrco Payfirma is looking for a highly motivated and results-oriented Senior Accountant to join our growing Finance team. As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for financial statement preparation and consolidation, supporting financial close processes, performing actual vs budget analysis for senior management, preparing account reconciliations, and filing provincial sales tax returns. The successful Senior Accountant will have advanced Microsoft Excel skills, excellent written & verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. This position offers a flexible hybrid schedule and fosters a great team environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end financial close processes,
  • Initiate financial statement preparation and consolidation,
  • Evaluate financial performance with monthly actual financial performance vs budget variance analyses,
  • Prepare balance sheet and income statement account reconciliations,
  • Compile aging reports to ensure accurate, efficient, and timely tracking of accounts receivable and payable,
  • Monitor and reconcile bank transactions,
  • Calculate sales tax on sales and purchases and file GST / HST returns,
  • Maintain the fixed assets and stock options registers,
  • Support correspondence with external auditors and tax consultants,
  • Work on other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or equivalent,
  • 3+ years related experience in an accounting environment with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process,
  • CPA Designated,
  • In-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS),
  • Familiarity with provincial sales tax regulations,
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (including vlookups, sumifs and pivot tables),
  • Hands-on experience with QuickBooks / QuickBooks Online,
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills,
  • Team player who is able to work independently,
  • Accuracy and attention to detail,
  • Knowledge of payments industry preferred but not required.
