What is the Opportunity?
Reporting to the Senior Manager Payroll, the Supervisor, Payroll Accounting will be leading a team to ensure payroll functions are completed accurately and timely. You will be overseeing operational processes and system(SAP) success for all divisions.

You will have a direct impact on payroll and HR procedures and policies that lead to audit compliance and continuous relationships between business units.

Your interactions go beyond your team to include employees and management at varying levels across multiple divisions. External auditors, payroll authorities, regulatory bodies, vendors and union representatives.  

You will implement processes and procedures to successfully oversee the Payroll team. 

What You'll Do

  • Facilitate team meetings and work in conjunction with the Payroll Management team
  • Manage effective internal/external client relationships within own area of responsibility and build client relationships with key internal partners. 
  • Promote professional and accurate responses to email and voice mail queries within 24-hour SLA
  • Provide project leadership for cross functional projects with ability to focus on continuous improvement of operational processes and system (SAP) 
  • Escalate potential service issues and audit compliance concerns to Sr. Manager, Payroll 
  • Evaluate, recommend, develop/refine and implement payroll policies and procedures in line with departmental strategies and legislation requirements.
  • Interpret day-to-day business priorities and work with the team to meet changing business needs.
  • Research, develop and maintain external and internal audit requirements to ensure effectiveness and efficiency of all payroll related processes.
  • Work with external and internal auditors and payroll tax authorities on information relating to internal processes, controls and tax remittances.
  • Support and manage recurring and year end processes.
  • Manage specified payroll functions for compliance and ensure accurate and timely master data and payroll processing.
  • Supervise a team of two or more employees.
  • Optimize the contribution of the team and implement workable solutions to business issues/problems with minimum referral to management.
  • Assist management team to create annual team objectives and conduct performance reviews.
  • Train team members on new or enhanced operational procedures and policies.
  • Organize coverage for team members for vacation, absences, and/or high-volume work periods to ensure departmental needs are met (cross-training)
  • Assist with processing and balancing of monthly GL reconciliations of various accounts, EI, CPP, WSIB, EHT, CRA tax remittances etc. 
  • Assist with year-end processing, validation and balancing of T4’s, T4A’s, Releve 1’s, W2’s and year end filings to applicable government bodies.
  • Prepare accounting journal entries when required, along with the appropriate analysis involved with such preparation.
  • Assist with Remitting all regulatory remittances in a timely fashion and reconcile/balance on a quarterly basis.
  • Maintain key internal control documentation. 
  • Document payroll and payroll accounting processes.

What You Bring to the Team

  • 5-7 years of experience in a payroll department
  • Accounting experience required
  • PLP Certification an asset 
  • Strong analytical and innovative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage and lead staff to excellent performance 
  • Ability to think independently
  • Must be a team player
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong time management and proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Must be highly organized 
  • Extensive knowledge of SAP 
  • Proficient at MS Office (Advanced Excel preferred) 
  • Knowledge of payroll Legislation 
  • Prior system conversion experiences an asset
  • Experience interpreting Union Contracts an asset
