Job Description - Biomedical Systems Administrator

The Biomedical Systems Administrator (BSA) is a qualified IT network and systems specialist dedicated to Biomedical Technology services and associated medical devices and technology. The position is responsible for managing medical device IT networks. This includes maintaining network information, architecture, and medical device or systems databases. The BSA will coordinate with individuals responsible for areas such as Biomed, Network Security, PACS, ISE, PC’s, EPIC teams, servers, backups, HHS Network, Network sub-contractor (Compucenter), Change Approval Board (CAB), Service Request (SR) Committee, IT Project Management Office, and various vendors. He/she will have certain levels of network security privileges including access to server rooms and closets; able to verify and assign addressing for devices and systems connected to HHS system network, Biomed VRF/firewall management, and access to other HHS IT resources as needed. With this, he/she is will coordinate and/or facilitate actions involving HHS IT, Biomedical Technology, and clinical staff to accomplish common objectives which include changes and new implementations including EHR interfaces with medical devices. Will be expected to assist in troubleshooting system issues and develop protocols and policies. Will be assigned as primary responder for a particular site.
  • Post-Secondary Education in Computer Sciences
  • 3 years’ experience in a hospital information technology environment
  • In-depth knowledge of PCs, networks (including wireless), servers, in a primarily Microsoft environment
  • Strong planning, analytical and interpretive skills, note-taking, creation of documentation
  • Strong troubleshooting skills
  • Good understanding of project management methodology
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, team-oriented, and collaborative environment
  • Microsoft/CompTIA Certification preferred
  • Knowledge of medical devices, device-HIS integration, middleware (e.g. Capsule), and HL7; are assets

Services such as electrical inspection, device evaluation and user support are also mandated. Specialties exist for highly sophisticated systems. Also provides support for basic instrumentation. Significant emphasis is placed on the repair and maintenance of medical devices. Schedule Work Hours Monday to Friday; Days (after-hours work in emergency situations (e.g. downtimes).
