Role Responsibilities

Alberta Justice, Legal Services Division, has an opportunity for a lawyer to join the Infrastructure and Transportation and Economic Corridors (ITEC) Legal Team as an Assistant Director. The ITEC Legal Team provides advice to the Departments of Infrastructure and Transportation and Economic Corridors. The team performs a full range of solicitor services including providing significant legislative interpretation, and development, and as well work involving capital procurement and contracts. The team also supports Transportation and Economic Corridors with legislative interpretation of the Traffic Safety Act, including administrative sanctions issued under the Act, and is involved in advising on legislative and policy matters for a number of priority issues for both client ministries. We are looking for a self-motivated individual capable of leading and coordinating legal support for the client ministries, and providing legal advice in terms of significant legislative analysis/development and capital procurement. The responsibilities of the position include:

  • Leading legislative, policy, and operational advice under the Traffic Safety Act, the Real Property Governance Act and any other legislation for the client ministries
  • Identifying legal risks and mitigation strategies throughout the life cycle of a significant client projects including legislation, contract management and public procurement;
  • Assisting with human resource matters on the team;
  • Assigning work and assisting with briefing notes and other required reporting;
  • Supporting the Director with general team operations including team meetings and morale building activities;
  • Acting as a mentor and coach; and
  • Acting for the Director.


The role the Assistant Director consists of:

  • Performing the role of senior legal counsel;
  • Managing client relationships; and
  • Day to day direct supervision of Civil Crown Counsel on the Team.


The ideal candidate will be capable of forming good client relationships and will have:

  • A strong client focus – an ability to serve as the primary client contact and support briefings and communications within Justice and the client ministries;
  • The ability to lead a cross-team of solicitors and litigators;
  • Exceptional legal, problem solving and interpersonal-client relation skills;
  • Strong analytical, research and verbal skills, and superior written advocacy and communication abilities are essential;
  • Strong legislative interpretation skills and experience with legislation development; and
  • High flexibility and the ability to work within a project team or individually and respond quickly to address changing client needs, issues, and priorities.

Qualifications

We are looking for individuals who have: A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (JD). The candidates must be active members or must have immediate eligibility for full membership with the Law Society of Alberta; Required:

  • demonstrated leadership experience, either informally or in formal leadership positions;
  • a minimum of 11 years Assessed Related Experience (ARE);


Assets:

  • experience in interpreting and managing legislation and legislative development;
  • experience in providing legal advice in relation to legislative projects;
  • experience providing advice in respect of administrative penalties assessed under statute; or
  • public sector contract and procurement experience.
