Administrative Full-time New Position As a principal investigator for the Smart Manufacturing and Advanced Recycling Technologies (SMART) Centre, this role leads applied research and innovation activities in Software, IT, Cybersecurity, and AI, supporting the College research strategy, including training and supervising student researchers. Using industry knowledge, technical training, research, and problem-solving, applied research activities are conducted to provide high-quality, executable results for industry partners and other collaborators. This role trains and manages student researchers for project activities, ensuring that students have access to the support they need to be successful in their roles. In support of the Director, the Software Researcher acts as a liaison with industry partners, working through project deliverables and providing information. The successful candidate will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with two days on-site, and three days remote. Responsibilities
  • Lead applied research activities related to project work representing the interests of Conestoga College and industry partners
  • Plan project activities based on research agreement and scheduling resources (i.e., equipment, space, students, support staff, faculty)
  • Supervise student activities in a constructive learning environment, review student work for completion and accuracy, and mentor students for research projects
  • Serve as a principal investigator, providing subject matter expertise in software and algorithms, embedded systems, machine learning / AI, and cybersecurity for multiple concurrent industry projects
  • Assist in the preparation of project documentation, including technical performance metrics, reporting to industry partners, and funding agencies
  • Ensure that sufficient equipment and resources are available to complete project work based on the project budget and ordering with the support of the Research Services (ORS) team to ensure compliance
  • Conduct literature and technical research associated with required project outcomes
  • Document and analyze project results; draw meaningful conclusions from data based on industry knowledge and communicate clearly to industry partners, writing clear and concise final reports
  • Collaborate with researchers, faculty, and support staff in support of project work; seek expert advice on project work as required
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis, and interpretation
  • Engage with workers and other stakeholders while collecting data in the field
  • Create project activity schedules and experimental design
  • Attend and participate in activities such as hosting webinars, participating in conferences, and project-related networking
  • Provide technical support for development of reports
  • Coordinate social media activities related to projects
  • Help prepare interim and final reports; draft scientific publication and submission
  • Apply and maintain research ethics approval from Conestoga College’s Applied Research and Innovation
  • Provide advice and recommendations for equipment/related infrastructure procurement and maintenance
  • Provide technical input to grant applications and partner agreements (i.e., fee for service), including estimated time to complete tasks and equipment capability and capacity
  • Assist with student or other interviews where needed and help determine required resources and expertise for project tasks
  • Remain up to date on current industry trends; conduct research relevant to project work to best serve industry partners
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field of study
  • Minimum five years of practical work experience in developing software in C/C++/C#, Python, embedded systems toolchains, database systems, data analytics, and other key IT-related research and development tools
  • Solid understanding of software development methodologies, principles, and best practices
  • Experience with version control systems like Git and JIRA is an asset
  • A strong and successful track record of coordinating complex projects, especially software product development projects, and entrepreneurial background an asset
  • A strong understanding of qualitative and quantitative research techniques
  • Excellent communication, writing, research, and networking skills
  • Proven track record for teamwork and ability to handle multiple projects concurrently
  • Publications, conference presentations, etc. are an asset
