The Maintenance Worker position is responsible for assisting in the maintenance of the facilities and properties of The Salvation Army Weetamah. This includes performing general maintenance, repairs, janitorial, grounds upkeep and coordinating with contractors as necessary.

  • Part-time position at 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintenance
  • Completes minor repairs, maintenance, and preventative tasks in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Completes regular reviews of the condition of the facility in conjunction with the supervisor.
  • Works with supervisor to secure contracts for projects including quotes submissions and approvals.
  • Maintains a list of qualified and/or approved contractors for trades and services.
  • May undertake minor renovation projects, including dry walling, carpentry, minor electrical repairs, painting, and plumbing, etc.
  • Coordinates set up and tear down of specified spaces for regular or seasonal events.
  • Checks doors and windows to ensure building safety.
  • Ensures the external property is kept in a safe and clean condition, including removing garbage, discarded needles, cutting grass, shoveling snow and removing ice from sidewalks, etc.
  1. Volunteers
  • Works with volunteers, fine option participants and others as required to complete building maintenance tasks.
  1. Health and Safety
  • Acts as the first contact person for all health and safety concerns related to building and property matters.
  • Responsible for taking concerns to the supervisor and providing corrective action as necessary.
  1. Administration
  • Conducts annual inventory of maintenance equipment in conjunction with the Admin. Assistant.
  • Coordinates with The Salvation Army MB Property Personnel as necessary.
  • Attends and participates in monthly staff meetings.

Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of Secondary School or Equivalent
  • Post-secondary education or training in building, property, or trades management will be considered an asset.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • A minimum of one (1) year of related experience in building operations, property maintenance including heat plant, HVAC, carpentry, construction and general repairs (i.e., electrical & plumbing)
  • Working knowledge of building codes and regulations, occupational health and safety standards, and fire and emergency procedures.
  • Valid Manitoba Driver license, a copy of a current driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Working knowledge of Office365 an asset
  • Ability and willingness to provide a current Certification in Standard First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent intervention training an asset.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e. The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check.

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools.
  • Able to lift to 50 lbs, push, and pull various items such as equipment, furniture, and other items.
  • Able to climb, and work from, ladders at heights of up to 15 feet.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and willingness to sign a confidentiality statement.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Good interpersonal skills and attentive listening skills.
  • Participate as an active and responsible team member in all work groups through which position responsibilities are achieved.
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
