Position Overview

The incumbent supervises Health Information Services (HIS) staff who perform the functions of Health Information Services which include the registration of patients, bed assignment, and the operation of telephone switchboard, paging and patient inquiry. The focus of the position is to ensure that patients are registered according to standards and best practices, and that registration and communication processes optimize workflow. The incumbent also represents the hospital and department on site, regional and provincial committees, working groups and project teams which have a focus on registration and communication services. In the absence of the Health Information Services Manager, the incumbent assumes delegated activities.

Experience

  • Two years direct experience in Patient Registration.
  • Demonstrated experience with an automated admission/discharge/transfer (ADT) application including knowledge and experience with software messaging standards.
  • Experience with telephone communication equipment.
  • Experience with interpretation and application of relevant privacy and related legislation; e.g. Personal Health Information Act, Mental Health Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Fatality Inquiry Act, Vital Statistics Act.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Graduate of a recognized training program for Health Information Management Professionals, Business Administration, Health Services Management is required.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively schedule, supervise, direct, motivate, and evaluate staff.
  • A thorough understanding of client registry and registration functions and their inter-relationship and integration with other Health Information Services functions; e.g. medical transcription, health record management, coding/abstracting and data management.
  • Excellent organizational, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to make independent decisions within scope of practice and role.
  • Demonstrated team building and coaching skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft office programs and staff automated scheduling systems, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
