Description

Under the direction of the WMS Supervisor the employee provides resident support services, on-site supervision and security for the NWT Resource Centre and Withdrawal Management Services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Accountabilities:

Provides resident support services while on shift by:

  • Assisting residents with personal care concerns
  • Providing residents with supplies as required
  • Assisting residents with forms and requests as required
  • Interacting and communicating positively with residents throughout the shift
  • Check on clients to ensure personal safety, especially when experiencing withdrawal symptoms
  • Database entries – notes, behavior, meds, intakes, discharges
  • Doing manual logbook entries for meds and counselling supports
  • Explaining/reinforcing information provided to clients in a consistent and professional manner
  • Carefully assisting residents with their medication and documenting same
  • Responding to medical emergencies within the facility
  • Regularly reporting to case workers concerning resident behaviours
  • Immediately reporting critical incidents to the on-call supervisor or the WMS Supervisor
  • Daily follow up of resident chores to ensure completion
  • Admitting and discharging residents according to the Policies and Procedures, manual documentation and logbook, and summary of client’s intake, clean beds, wash walls around bed (immediate area), check bags when client admitted

Provides site management and security throughout your shift by:

  • Reporting any facility concerns to the WMS Supervisor or designate
  • Assuring security of facility through locking appropriate doors and monitoring clients coming and going
  • Completing room checks as part of the round’s duty
  • Completing room searches as directed by the Caseworkers or WMS Supervisor
  • Ensuring that residents do not exceed their allowable limit of personal effects
  • Itemizing and packing up clients’ personal effects when they are removed from the facility
  • Ensuring facility is left clean and tidy for following shift:  wash linens (wash linens when client leaves as well as whatever else needs washing), wash walls, floors, put away supplies, order supplies (copy to WMS Supervisor, copy to caseworkers), replace toilet paper, paper towels
  • Assisting with the general upkeep and maintenance of the Centre
  • Overnight staff need to respond to hourly radio checks and help monitor security cameras for the fourth floor Mental Health Support program, including providing 4th floor resident access to the building when necessary

Provides administrative support while on shift by :

  • Answering the telephone and relaying messages to clients and other departments as required
  • Sending e-mail messages as required
  • Completes records such as: Client Medication; Incident reports.
  • Completing filing duties, which includes preparing new files, archiving old files, retrieving archived files when there are returning clients, taking, and retrieving files from 2nd floor of Resource Centre
  • Responding to requests from other departments within the NWT Resource Centre where feasible
  • Assisting with general reception on the 3rd floor
  • Maintaining accurate client records
  • Attending all scheduled staff meetings
  • Maintaining current understanding of policies and procedures
  • Works wake shift during the night
  • Maintaining healthy working relationships with NWT Resource Centre staff, WMS staff, allied professionals, and other referral parties
  • Relaying pertinent information related to client concerns, operational issues, community issues, etc. promptly to appropriate personnel
  • Following formal lines of communication as identified by The Salvation Army organizational structure
  • Other duties as assigned by WMS Supervisor or his designate

Responsible for utilizing the facility and its equipment in a safe and efficient manner by :

  • Understanding and adhering to legal requirements
  • Implementing appropriate emergency procedures related to the facility and/or the clients i.e., CPR, fire evacuations, etc.
  • Completing unusual occurrence documentation as required (when employee or client has an accident on site report within 24 hours to The Salvation Army)
  • Identifying and reporting any unsafe conditions promptly to WMS Supervisor or designate
  • Knowing WMS’ physical layout, including location of fire pull boxes, extinguishers, communications radio,
  • storage rooms, laundry room, janitorial room, etc.
  • Maintaining a clean and professional looking office

Critical Relationship Management:

Internal/External relationships:

  • Directly reports to the Withdrawal Management Services Supervisor
  • There is constant contact with clients to provide for their needs and assess their situations.
  • There is daily contact with employees from other departments to pass on relevant information and radio checks.
  • There is regular contact with the WMS Supervisor and individual caseworkers to communicate client information.
  • There is also occasional contact with contracting agencies.
  • Emergency Services may occasionally need to be called

Working Conditions:

The work environment can be fast paced and demanding.  The need to be constantly aware of the environment and the movements and attitudes of the individual clients can be stressful.  There is a potential to work with aggressive, high-risk clients in this position. There will be general housekeeping tasks required of the SW (sweeping, mopping, dishwashing, laundry, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Qualifications, Experience and Certifications:

Generally, these skills are found in individuals who have previous experience or training in corrections, security and/or an addiction setting.  Appropriate computer skills are obtained through general introduction courses in computers or through practical experience. Certifications required are:

  • Post-Secondary Education or related experience in Social Services
  • High School Graduate
  • Conflict Resolution
  • First Aid
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Verbal Judo and/or NVCI
  • Suicide Intervention
  • WHMIS
  • Clear Criminal Record Check

Note: Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Ability to work within the mandate of and embrace the mission of The Salvation Army
  • The ability to respond appropriately, decisively, and effectively in crisis situations and in a stressful environment
  • Effective communication in English both written and oral
  • Effective assessment, observation and recording skills
  • Implement policy and procedures
  • Ability to work within a teamwork structure though will be required to work alone
  • Effective interviewing skills
  • Understanding of: Aboriginal and Inuit Cultures: Addictions: Mental Health and other social issues
  • Computer skills are required

The successful incumbent will be required to complete/provide:

  • Valid Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Valid First Aid certificate
  • WHMIS
  • The Salvation Army on-line certification for abuse prevention
  • Clear internal abuse registry check
  • Participate in mandatory yearly training
