The Toronto District School Board invites applications from qualified teachers for the position of Native Languages Teacher at Eastview Public School.

The 10-month position will be filled commencing September 1, 2024, and is scheduled to end June 30, 2025, subject to any restructuring, reorganization and/or possible renewal.

The goal of the Native Language Program is to generate an education delivery model that will improve educational outcomes for Indigenous students. The program model allows students to work at their own pace with individualized instruction in a non-competitive environment.  The program's foundation and success are based on traditional practices while offering "wrap around" services that meet the needs of Indigenous students and foster positive Indigenous identity, academic success, and overall well-being.

The goal of the Indigenous Native Languages Program in the TDSB is to focus on the acquisition of Ojibwe (Anishinaabemowin) language skills.

The successful candidate will report to the Centrally Assigned Principal/Vice-Principal, Indigenous Education, will be supervised locally by the school Principal, and will be supported by the Urban Indigenous Education Centre.

Summary of Duties:

Ø  Provide leadership in fostering equity and inclusiveness in the development and implementation of programs and services, and commit to and implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action;

Ø  Provide culturally relevant and culturally safe learning environments and instruction based on students’ learning styles, strengths and needs;

Ø  Apply effective Indigenous Education teaching and learning strategies and practices;

Ø  Perform initial and on-going assessments to support and monitor the success of Indigenous students, along with preparing evaluation for report cards;

Ø  Support the process of collecting and interpreting student success data to enable staff to make informed decisions about programming for Aboriginal students;

Ø  Provide culturally relevant learning instruction based on students’ learning styles, strengths and needs;

Ø  Mentor and work collaboratively with other staff to effectively adapt and support the classroom program and instruction for First Nations, Métis and Inuit students;

Ø  Support and coordinate on-going implementation of program initiatives and development of promising practices in Indigenous Education;

Ø  Assist in the coordination of access for students to support and interventions;

Ø  Provide programming and language acquisition skills related to the Ojibwe (Anishinaabemowin) language; and

Ø  Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

Ø  Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of Qualifications;

Ø  Native Languages; Ojibwe (Anishinaabemowin) fluency required; College of Teachers Certification in the subject is preferred;

Ø  Knowledge and understanding of current issues and research pertaining to Indigenous Education;

Ø  A well-informed understanding of the histories of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples in Canada;

Ø  A strong familiarity with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights (UNDRIP) of Indigenous Peoples as they relate to student achievement and well-being, as well as community expectations;

Ø  An ability to engage with Elders and community, and offering cultural programming would be considered an asset;

Ø  Proven ability in promoting equitable practices that value inclusiveness and diversity;

Ø  Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and an openness to co-planning and co-teaching;

Ø  Experience delivering staff development workshops/in-service;

Ø  Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a learning/working environment that actively promotes and upholds UNDRIP, Indigenous rights and human rights;

Ø  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;

Ø  Proven strengths in problem-solving and adapting to change; and

Ø  Competency in computer skills and electronic communication.

2.    If a Position of Responsibility Allowance is currently held, that Allowance does not transfer to this position.
