Description

The Janitor is responsible for performing janitorial duties that ensure The Salvation Army Kamloops in maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in compliance with applicable standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works independently or cooperatively with team members to complete tasks on schedule and according to quality standards.
  • Cleans, sanitizes, sweeps, dusts, mops, washes, vacuums, polishes, and waxes floors.
  • Cleans windows, mirrors, woodwork, furniture, equipment, and other surfaces.
  • Cleans offices, kitchen, washrooms and all other rooms.
  • Cleans, sterilizes and/or disinfects equipment before and after each use.
  • Organizes and maintains janitorial supplies in janitorial room.
  • Empties trash bins and disposes of trash and recycling in the bins and works with the supervisors to arrange the disposal of items that do not fit.
  • Checks, cleans, moves, arranges and dusts furniture as required.
  • Restock supplies of toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and other hygiene items throughout the building.
  • Spot washes accessible walls and spot clean carpets as required.
  • Organizes own work with some flexibility to choose alternative sequence of tasks based on the current circumstances.
  • Complies with all prescribed sanitation and building disinfecting protocols.
  • Monitors and maintains stock of regularly used items, i.e. mops, brooms, supplies etc., and makes sure they are ordered as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Typical working location for this position is in the entire facility and property designated.
  • Schedule may vary from week to week and include both weekdays and weekends.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required.
  • The incumbent is required to lift/move up to 50 pounds.
  • The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills.
  • The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment.
  • Works under the following disagreeable conditions:
    • Handle garbage
    • Isolation and monotony
    • Odors
    • Dealing with angry people
    • Exposure to drugs and alcohol
    • Exposure to toxic chemicals
    • Various weather conditions
    • Washrooms (i.e. human waste)
    • Multi-tasking
  • May be exposed to the risk of moderate to severe injury or illnesses due to:
    • Exposure to infectious diseases
    • Exposure to toxic chemicals
    • Moving objects
    • Sharp objects (e.g. needle pricking)
    • Electrical Hazards
    • Injury from lifting
    • Falling on wet/slippery floors
    • Repetitive strain injuries (e.g. back, wrist).

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:

  • Completion of High School (an alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable)
  • Up-to-date CPR/First Aid certification.

Experience:

  • A minimum of three (3) months prior related experience, including general familiarity with professional cleaning and maintenance procedures.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • An understanding of and support for the Mission Statement of the Salvation Army in Canada
  • Excellent customer/donor service ethics including the ability to deal with the public in a friendly manner
  • A proven ability to work in a team setting as well as a willingness to take personal initiatives
  • The ability to adapt to change and interruptions to a normal work routine, and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • A willingness to adhere to a dress code of modesty, neatness and cleanliness
  • The successful applicant must have, or be willing to obtain, a criminal record check, clearance from the National Abuse Registry and be bondable

HOURS: Part-time between 6 and 10 hours per week, Monday to Fridays, casual/on-call position.

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent.
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening.
  • A clean drivers abstract.
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
