Reporting to the Director, Spiritual Health, the Leader oversees and co-leads the Spiritual Health education program across the designated portfolio with the senior educator. This includes developing an educational strategy that promotes and facilitates ongoing development/growth needs of Spiritual Health educators, interns and staff. Working on behalf of the regional program, the position provides leadership and consultation to organizational leadership and staff regarding education strategies, and initiatives, and develops innovative educational programming to support program and organizational initiatives, and the training and supervision of interns, Educators, and organizational staff.

 

As a Leader, Spiritual Health Education with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Co-coordinate the overall leadership in Spiritual Health education in accordance with the organization’s mission, vision, values and strategic direction as well as the regional program’s vision and philosophy and professional practice standards by fostering a climate of continued learning and growth, and encouraging and supporting a variety of educational programs and strategies.
  • Identify education goals and objectives, and ensures sound ethical educational practices to advance the program.
  • Co-coordinate and co-lead the efforts of all Spiritual Care VCH Educator/Supervisors at multiple sites across all cost centres in both Community and Acute programs.
  • Provide training for Provisional Supervisors seeking certification as CPE Educator/Supervisors.
  • Provide clinical training and supervision of interns through group and individual teaching practices.
  • In consultation with the Director, provide education to local denominational clergy and other spiritual leaders on how health care can interface with spiritual communities in such matters as disaster management, advance health care directives and addictions treatment.
  • Co-oversee all intern and resident departmental and Health Authority onboarding from initial screening through to the start of clinical training.
  • Contribute to the development of an Educational Strategy to support the professional transition throughout the course of a career.
  • Develop a regional education framework for the program that is nimble and responsive to changing needs of the program and the organization.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement multiple education delivery modalities for the organization that are current, easily accessible, and supports the educational needs of staff, educators and managers.
  • Develop program evaluation strategies to ensure key educational objectives are met, and appropriate learning has occurred.
  • Network and interface with any college or university with which the program has an affiliation agreement – including recruitment, promotion, admission and record keeping.
  • Work in concert with the Director, S.H. to ensure that educators are implementing appropriate professional standards for themselves and their students in accordance with MOH, and VCH expectations.
  • Work with the Director to envision new approaches to educational services and/or develop new sites of operation. Identifies areas of need and new opportunities for special pilot projects with the assistance of respective local VCH based foundations.
  • In support of the Director, ensures all matters are in good order for renewal of accreditation of VCH as a CASC teaching site every 5 years, or as required.
  • Make recommendations for changes to those sections of the curriculum under local control.
  • Make recommendations for regular updates to the educational library.
  • Identify areas of need and new opportunities for special pilot projects with the assistance of respective local VCH based foundations.
  • Provide direct care to patients and families as required.
  • Stay abreast of any new developments with the national curriculum and the CASC Educational Standards Commission: works to ensure that educators are aware of any changes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • Meets preparatory qualification of a Spiritual Health Educator as listed in the MOH Framework for the hiring of SC professionals.
  • Certification with the Canadian Association of Spiritual Care (CASC) as a Teaching supervisor of Clinical Pastoral Education and its international partners or has current standing as a certified Spiritual Health Practioner eligible for application as a Provisional Educator-Supervisor with CASC
  • Master’s Degree that includes graduate courses required by CASC.
  • A minimum of 3 years (more preferred) Experience working as a clinical pastoral educator.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience or demonstrated ability to effectively coordinate educators, interns, preceptors within a complex clinical and inter-professional milieu involving multiple programs and multiple sites.
  • Applies comprehensive knowledge and skill in educational theory, research, technology and related best practices as well as networking abilities to support enhanced educational practices.
  • Uses superior group facilitation, team building, negotiating, conflict resolution skills and an interactive teaching style to engage learners with a variety of different learning styles and facilitate critical thinking and problem resolution.
  • Fosters creativity and innovation in strategic planning involving learning and development and in the development of teaching and learning strategies.
  • Applies superior written communication abilities and proficient computer skills in the design and composition of creative high quality, interactive learning materials.
  • Advanced computer literacy including the flexibility to work with various work related software programs including Microsoft Office (word processing, databases, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, etc), Outlook, Internet, etc.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
