About Our Opportunity   Under the guidance and direction of a Manager, the Developmental Engineer will carry out varied junior engineering assignments while working within engineering practices, standards, codes and specifications within Provincial Government and the applicable field of Engineering. The Developmental Engineer will support in-house professional engineering staff in the development of Engineering related activities within their field and the review of the work performed by outside professional consultants and contractors. The Developmental Engineer will gain practical knowledge and experience in government policies, procedures, and operations. Primary Accountabilities   As the Developmental Engineer, your primary accountabilities will include (but are not limited to):    Performing entry level professional engineering work. Tasks and decisions made at this level have ample precedent or are in line with clearly defined procedures. Work is reviewed by a Senior Professional Engineer while in progress and at completion, for accuracy and adherence to engineering principles.   Supporting professional engineering staff in the development and implementation of projects and initiatives. This may include the development of related documents, drawings and specifications issued under the control of the Senior Professional Engineer to whom they are assigned. The Developmental Engineer will assist in the application of safe, accepted and "good engineering practices" in the selection and design of engineering components, codes, and government standards. This position utilizes sound judgement, attention to detail and a reasonable understanding of engineering systems/specifications/standards/designs within their respective field.   Reviewing designs and/or proposals submitted by others from within and outside the department; assisting in the preparation of requests for proposals and evaluation of proposals to hire consultants and to confirm payment for services rendered.   May assist in conducting root cause analyses on critical equipment failures, further developing preventative maintenance programs/best practices, and analyzing data to determine equipment availability, downtime etc.   Assisting the Senior Engineer in administering contracted work which would include providing updates to the Senior Engineer on ongoing work, reviewing documents to gain experience in determining compliance to contract specifications, reviewing quality assurance results, gaining experience in calculating of both theoretical and actual quantities, and ensuring requirements of various acts, regulations, & policies including but not limited to the Occupational Health & Safety Act. May review data/report/field notes for the purpose of verifying payment to third parties for work performed. Qualifications and Experience   You must have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with a recognized institution, and actively pursue licensure as an Engineer-In-Training in their field within the Province of Nova Scotia.   You must have demonstrated experience in the following areas:     Sound knowledge and experience in various types of mechanical systems and how mechanical systems interface with other disciplines and systems; Expertise in energy conservation and efficiency initiatives for the provincial building portfolio Analyzing and providing program recommendations through reports and advice to management. Knowledge of codes and standards related to mechanical building system design, construction and commissioning; Excellent computer skills are required, Hands on experience in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, and Carrier's Hourly Analysis Program. We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks. Candidates may be required to provide a current driver’s abstract upon request, This is a Term employment opportunity with anticipated end date of February 28, 2025 with the possibility of a 1 Year extension.
