Your Opportunity:

AHS provides alternative job opportunities for those International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who are not able to obtain independent licensure on their own and/or are unable to obtain a residency position. Clinical Assistants are important members of the collaborative care team at Alberta Health Services (AHS); functioning as mid-level providers under the supervision and direction of physician supervisor(s) to provide acute care coverage within our hospitals. Making a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Clinical Assistants are registered for supervised practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) under the Limited Practice Registry and provide clinical support under the direction of AHS Medical Staff. In this position you will deliver care to patients at the South Health Campus (SHC) site within a multidisciplinary team in Neurology, with occasional cross coverage at the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC). The Clinical Assistant will provide acute Neurology call coverage for one weekend a month, in addition to providing continuity of care during the day weekdays at SHC for inpatient neurology. Clinical Assistants are paid for a 50 hour work week while the scheduled hours may be averaged over 2-4 weeks. For example, weekday shifts within this program are often scheduled for 16 hours in-house overnight coverage. The schedule is designed to meet clinical needs and align with other members of the care team; as discussed between the Section Chief and the Clinical Assistant.

Description:

You will be responsible for providing ongoing medical management for acute neurologic patients under supervision of medical staff via daily rounds at South Health Campus. You may also be asked to perform consultations in the emergency department or on the wards where you will assess patients for a new neurologic concern. You will be expected to attend weekly educational rounds, in addition to multidisciplinary rounds which occur on a biweekly basis. As a result of these activities there will be considerable exposure to a wide variety of clinical problems in internal medicine and neurology which will be useful for future professional development. You will work as a part of a multidisciplinary team of including neurologists, residents, medical students, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and nursing attendants. Your responsibilities will include: Rounding and ongoing management of neurologic problems on the ward. Admission of new neurologic patients. Discharge of patients from the ward. One weekend of call coverage, which includes two shifts, at SHC (Friday PM 1700h – Saturday AM 1000h, and Sunday 0800h – Monday 1000h). Participating in various educational and patient related rounds. Appropriate supervision and support are provided and will begin with a rigorous formal orientation and assessment. Contribution to quality improvement projects regarding inpatient neurologic care. Only those demonstrating the strongest qualifications will be contacted for an interview.

English Language Proficiency. As a requirement for licensure by the CPSA, applicants must have achieved a minimum score within 24 months of registration in either the Academic version of International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Occupational English Test (OET) Medicine examination, or CELPIP General Examination. Medical Degree and Transcripts. Applicants must be a graduate of a medical school located outside of Canada and the USA, listed in the Foundation of Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) - International Medical Directory (IMD). Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME). As a requirement for licensure by the CPSA, applicants must have completed at least one full year of hands-on training (outside of Canada and the USA) after having completed their undergraduate medical training, no exceptions. Specialty training must show evidence of being hands on and supervised for it to meet this requirement.


Preferred Qualifications:

Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part I (MCCQE1). Applicants must have passed the MCC QE1 prior to application. Currency of practice; including evidence discipline-specific postgraduate training or discipline-specific independent practice within the last 3 years. Preference will be given to applicants who have recent experience in an acute care facility; specifically, those who have had specific experience within the last 3 years in neurology.
