Reporting to the Associate Vice-Principal Research, Facilities, the Core Facility Manager, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the NMR Facility. The incumbent will interact with students and post-docs on a variety of different projects and will also be responsible for cryogen fills (both helium and nitrogen), general maintenance of spectrometers, troubleshooting instruments when failures occur and will take the lead in interacting with vendors and other suppliers to ensure a smooth operation. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing day-to-day operational needs for one or more labs/workshops.
  • Performing lab experiments that requires great precision and attention to many details.
  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols.
  • Providing safety training and ensuring compliance to lab safety procedures and standards.
  • Training others on the operation of instrumentation and experimental protocol.
  • Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years’ demonstrated experience in NMR spectroscopy.
  • A thorough knowledge of modern protein NMR methods and applications including but not limited to NMR experiments for resonance assignments, structure determination and relaxation measurements of proteins, as well as structure validation for small molecules.
  • A thorough knowledge of NMR spectrometer hardware, operating software, and software for analysis of spectra.
  • Experience with cryogenic probes, cold heads, turbo pumps, RF equipment, and their maintenance.
  • Familiarity with linux operating systems and data storage protocols.
  • Experience in troubleshooting NMR equipment and in handling cryogens.
  • Experience managing NMR centers or working with NMR vendors.
  • Experience with overseeing day-to-day operations of a research lab, scheduling resources, tracking inventory, ordering supplies, coordinating equipment maintenance, troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Strong knowledge of University’s Environmental Health & Safety Program,Policies, Procedures and Guidelines, and experience with providing safety training and ensuring compliance to lab safety procedures and standards.
  • Ability to demonstrate and explain lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols to students, lab personnel, faculty, and other users.
Assets (Nonessential):
  • PhD in Life Sciences, Chemistry, or Physics is preferred.
  • Experience with implementation of basic solid state (MAS) NMR and NMR studies using other nuclei (eg. metals).
