Position Summary Reporting to the Manager of Inpatient Mental Health, Emergency Mental Health and the Medication Clinic, you will be responsible to provide quality social work services congruent with the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. The registered social worker will work within an interdisciplinary team model of care and implement a full scope of practice in clinical care areas including psychosocial assessment, family engagement, brief supportive interventions, resource identification, coordination and/or utilization of available resources, education, and advocacy for patients presenting to the Emergency Department and experiencing mental health crisis or concerns. Practice will focus on the application of an anti-oppressive, person-centred model of care and recovery orientated and harm reduction approaches for persons with acute and chronic health issues, including cognitive impairment, dementia, mental health issues, concurrent disorders, addictions, and caregiver burnout. The Social Worker will work as a member of the interdisciplinary team of the Emergency Department. Education Requirements
  • Master of Social Work Degree (M.S.W.) from an accredited University School of Social Work (preferred)
  • Registration with the Ontario College of Social Work and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW)
  • Indigenous Cultural Safety Training, preferred
  • Non-violent crisis intervention certificate an asset
Mandatory Qualifications
  • Recent Social Work experience in a hospital’s Emergency Department and/ or Acute Medical and Post-Acute programs and discharge planning for populations listed above.
  • Demonstrated competency in providing services using an anti-oppressive approach as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Proven ability to manage competing demands and prioritize work in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Excellent working knowledge of related provincial legislation including Health Care Consent Act, Substitute Decisions Act, Public Hospitals Act, and community resources
  • Working knowledge of social supports including, Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP).
  • Knowledge of psychosocial, relational and health issues across the life span, including family birthing, paediatrics, grief and loss, caregiver stress/burnout, chronic illness and psychosocial/physiological conditions affecting the patient population
  • Proven ability to work in an empathic manner to engage hard to reach and marginalized populations
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development with respect to the practice of social work
  • Effective September 7th, 2021, all applicants must provide proof of two doses for full vaccination against Covid-19 (in the form of watermark receipts from the provincial portal) or provide written proof of a medical or religious reason for not being fully vaccinated as per Organization Policy, Covid-19 Immunization and Management.

  • Excellent organizational skills to be able to cope with a fluctuating workload
  • Experience providing crisis-based counselling interventions.
  • Good knowledge of community resources
