Unit Summary

McMaster Children's Hospital’s (MCH) Child and Youth Mental Health Program (CYMHP) is one of Canada’s largest pediatric mental health service providers. Mandated to provide care for both local and regional patients CYMHP offers a wide range of services for children, youth, and families experiencing complex mental health concerns. Our program includes emergency mental health services, a 22-bed inpatient unit, a day treatment program, and ambulatory services. The program is divided across 2 sites with locations at McMaster University Medical Centre (MUMC) and the Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre (RJCHC). Affiliated with McMaster University’s Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, and the Offord Centre for Child Studies, CYMHP provides evidence-informed, integrated and coordinated family and patient centered care. Our program is committed to creating and maintaining strong community partnerships, ensuring the alignment of services during transitions in care. The Family Support Clinician works within a multidisciplinary team providing evidenced based interventions with a focus on increasing parenting capacity, improving the mental health of the child and supporting the work of other care providers. Interventions include: home/community visits, consultation and direct service delivery in clinic as well within the community. The Family Support Clinician uses family based interventions to provide guidance, coaching and support for parents/caregivers around normal developmental expectations, behaviour and emotion coaching and family communication skills to enhance the child/youth’s functioning. Co-ordination and collaboration with other providers within CYMHP Outpatient Services and in the community are an important part of the role of the Family Support Clinician.

Schedule Work Hours

Monday to Friday; days, some evenings (flexible hours)

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology or related field (e.g. Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Care)
2. Current Full-Professional Certified Membership with the appropriate association/college.
3. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in child and youth mental health field in either a community mental health based program, residential and/or hospital based program.
4. Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) preferred.
5. Demonstrated expertise in working with families, children and youth with acute and chronic mental health presentations.
6. Expert knowledge of the Hamilton community based services and resources.
7. Comprehensive knowledge of child & youth mental health issues, their treatment and interventions
8. Demonstrated ability to apply best practices in the delivery of mental health.
9. Demonstrated experience in providing evidence-based parenting/family interventions
10. Comprehensive knowledge of The Child, Youth & Family Services Act, The Mental Health Act, Substitute Decisions Act, Health Care Consent Act, and Personal and Health Information Protection Act and Youth Justice System.
11. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and in collaboration with multi-disciplinary team and clinical supervisors.
12. Ability to work autonomously and provide clinical care in the community and exercise mature and professional judgement in identifying safety and risk to oneself and others.
13. Demonstrated excellent professional judgment and conflict resolution skills in high risk situations.
14. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
15. Demonstrated ability to write quality reports consistent with program and hospital requirements.
16. Demonstrated efficiency with Microsoft office and utilization of health care based electronic documentation.
17. Must be licensed to drive a motor vehicle, "G license" and insured to do so in the Province of Ontario.
18. Must be able to obtain a valid Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS)
19. As a condition of employment, you are required to submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination to Employee Health Services.
