Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

Position Overview

The Multi-Organ Donor Coordinator is affiliated with Transplant Manitoba Gift of Life Organ Donor Organization (TMGLP-ODO), and is under the general direction of the Manager, Patient Care and the Medical Director, Transplant Manitoba Gift of Life Organ Donor Organization. The Multi-Organ Donor Coordinator works both independently and within a team; uses strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills; including the ability to interpret and communicate complex information to families in difficult situations within the Critical Care or Emergency Department environment.

The incumbent is responsible for:

  1. Coordinating the functions and activities related to the TMGLP- ODO (related to deceased and living donors).
  2. Ensuring that all prerequisites for organ donation, according to established policies, procedures and protocols, are adequately fulfilled.
  3. Assisting with data collection, recording, statistical analysis, etc. under supervision and according to established protocols and clinical study guidelines.
  4. Conducting audits pertaining to organ donation (e.g. death chart audit) in collaboration with the ODO Quality Systems Engineer.
  5. Conducting in-service education covering organ and tissue donation and transplantation at the professional/health care facility level through out Manitoba and other referring areas (e.g. Northwestern Ontario).
  6. Conducting educational programs for the public.
  7. Updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) protocols and educational materials for health care professionals, patients, and family members.
  8. Participating in the development and maintenance of a total quality management program in compliance with Health Canada Accreditation Standards.
  9. Raises awareness of donation within the hospital and participates as an active member of Organ and Tissue Donation Collaborative Committees at all WRHA facilities.

Experience

  • Minimum four years recent related nursing experience required.
  • Adult Intensive Care nursing course or equivalent, required.
  • Experience and interest in professional/public education preferred.
  • Competency with computers and presentation programs, (such as EPR, eChart, EMR, Accuro and Microsoft Office) required.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Graduate from an approved School of Nursing required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Current registration or eligibility for registration with College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM). Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
  • Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) registration at the targeted responder level required.
  • Must have current driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle with valid registration.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and creatively; as well as the ability work collaboratively and closely with other members of the health profession.
  • Ability to negotiate and facilitate consensus within the donation and transplantation stakeholder community, as well as knowledge in the area of quality improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve in complex situations.
  • Evidence of knowledge of the principles of adult learning and teaching strategies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development.
  • Initiates and supports change and process improvements.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Sensitive to spiritual, cultural and other relevant contexts of care.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex information to families in difficult situations within the Critical Care or Emergency Department environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be flexible, i.e. ability to take on-call and to work long continuous periods.
