Temporary Part-Time (0.5 FTE)
Vancouver, BC The BC Children’s Hospital Oncology program provides tertiary care to families and their children with cancer in British Columbia and the Yukon. Diagnostic and treatment services are offered by an interdisciplinary team that includes medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nutrition, child life, music therapy, and spiritual care. Psychological assessment, diagnosis, consultation, and therapeutic treatment are key contributions made by medical psychology within this team to meet the clinical needs of a child/youth experiencing pediatric cancer diagnosis and treatment and their families. This fellowship is comprised of:

  1. Direct clinical service delivery to children and youth impacted by a cancer diagnosis as well as their families. Multi-disciplinary rounds, brief psychosocial assessments/screenings, and direct consultations. Follow-up therapeutic care as needed.
  2. Providing consultation services to community providers for patients who live outside of the lower mainland to support building capacity across BC.
  3. Selected training, didactic and research experiences.

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Reporting to the Head of Psychology, the Director of Training and Program Manager/Director (if applicable) and in accordance with established policies, procedures, standards of practice and guidelines, the Post-Doctoral Fellow provides psychological services under supervision by Registered Psychologists on staff to assigned patients/clients with a variety of medical, developmental, behavioural, psychiatric and other problems. Contributes to departmental and organizational mandates and goals related to C&W’s role as an academic health centre.

The Psychology Post-Doctoral Fellow position is specialized training position. The emphasis of the post-doctoral fellowship position is on continued learning and training in a subspecialty are of service delivery or clinical population. Clinical service delivery is planned and provided in in the context of the specialized learning and training goals of the post-doctoral fellow and under the supervision of Primary, and if applicable, Secondary clinical supervisors. Supervision is provided in a developmental framework.

Key Accountabilities

  • In consultation and coordination with the Head and/or Associate Head of Psychology and/or Director of Training and the Program or Clinic Manager/Director (if applicable) the Post-Doctoral Fellow plans and organizes the provision of therapeutic, assessment, consultation, and/or teaching services for specified programs or patient group(s), that align with the Pre-Doctoral Fellow’s specialized clinical training goals.
  • In collaboration with the primary and/or site specific psychology supervisors and Program/Clinic Manager/Director (if applicable) will develop a specific training plan, with measurable outcomes and time frames to work towards training competencies.
  • Under supervision: Delivers a comprehensive range of psycho-diagnostic assessments and treatment services such as cognitive, educational and social/emotional evaluations and psychotherapeutic interventions, including individual or group therapy, behaviour management, play psychotherapy, hypnosis, biofeedback, parent groups.
  • Documents assessments, treatment plans and outcomes, under the co-signature of a supervising Psychologist.
  • Supervises and provides evaluations for Psychology practicum students, residents, and pre-doctoral fellows as appropriate, under the direction of the Head of Psychology and/or Associate Head of Psychology and/or Director of Training and individual supervising staff psychologists.
  • Maintains currency in the scientific literature relevant to area(s) of specialized clinical practice and in the application of scientific evidence to clinical decision-making.
  • Will participate in a variety of learning activities, including planned individual and group supervision, seminars, etc.
  • May participate in quality improvement, program evaluations/reviews, or population-specific reviews that are designed to be meaningful and manageable in the context of the advanced training position and approved by the Head of Psychology and/or Associate Head of Psychology and/or Director of Training and the Program/Clinic Manager/Director (if applicable)
  • Will be responsible to provide a final Post-Doctoral Fellowship summary describing achievements in training, service delivery and research (if applicable)

Qualifications

Training at the doctoral level in women’s, children and/or adolescent clinical and/or developmental psychology, pediatric neuropsychology, or a closely related area. All the requirements for the doctoral degree in must be completed. The applicant must have completed a CPA or APA accredited pre-doctoral residency (or equivalent).

Ability to communicate and present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to carry out duties in a timely fashion. Ability to establish priorities, develop/implement short-term and long-term objectives. Ability to deal with others effectively. Ability to teach and provide instruction. Proficiency in computer skills related to report writing and to recording and managing data.
