Job Description - Registered Nurse

Your Opportunity Reporting to the Perioperative Unit Manager the Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care to patients by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care in the Operating Room. The Misericordia Community Hospital OR includes the following types of services: general, plastic, urological, gynecological, and orthopedic surgery. Maintaining a high degree of professionalism, the successful candidate acts as an advocate, coordinator, and liaison for the patient by identifying needs and setting priorities in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to provide holistic care during the intra-operative and/or immediate post-operative periods. The incumbent will demonstrate competence in delivering safe, effective and efficient care in both a scrub and a circulating role as an integral part of the surgical team. The nurse is responsible to provide safe care throughout the patient stay in the OR and promotes their professional role by evaluating their own educational requirements and clinical practice. The RN will work within their full scope of practice on a continuum ranging from basic to advanced clinical nursing activities. The nurse will practice using evidence-based measures and outcomes. The RN is responsible for the provision of care in accordance with established standards (ORNAC), and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies and procedures of Covenant Health. Description The Registered Nurse (RN) participates in nursing assessments and interventions, care planning, implementing prescribed treatments, administering medications, evaluating treatments, and monitoring/documenting treatment progress and patient/resident response. Acting as an advocate, coordinator and liaison for the patient/resident, the RN identifies needs and sets priorities in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. The RN facilitates patient/resident and family education and discharge planning, and may be required to act in a charge nurse capacity. The RN is responsible for the provision of care in accordance with established standards, and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies and procedures of Covenant Health. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications: Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required. If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses are also required: 1) CRNA Medication Administration Certificate - 2) NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification - PLEASE NOTE: This posting is scheduled to close at 23:59 of the posting end date but may be filled earlier if a Regular Employee who holds a position within this unit/program/office expresses their interest in this vacancy by 23:59 on the 5th calendar day following the posting date, under LOU #25. Additional Required Qualifications Perioperative Nursing Certification course or a minimum of three months of recent operating room experience within the past three years. Must be able to lift 25lbs and have the physical ability to push, pull, bend, and stand for prolonged periods of time (more than 30 minutes). Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both spoken and written. Proven problem solving and critical thinking skills. Excellent assessment and organizational skills. Computer skills including experience with electronic charting and Microsoft Outlook. Preferred Qualifications At least two year’s operating room experience an asset. Consideration will be given to those who have successfully completed their final nursing practicum in the Operating Room. Canadian Nursing Association (CNA) Certification in Perioperative Nursing an asset.
