Introduction

The Department of Environment and Climate is seeking qualified candidates to fill the following positions:

  • Approvals Engineer on a regular/full-time basis
  • Environmental Engineer on a term/full/time basis

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Must be registered or eligible for registration with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba as a Professional Engineer
  • Must be able to perform field work which requires walking through rough terrain and carrying up to 20lbs
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence
  • Must be able to work overtime and outside of regular working hours as required

Qualifications:

Essential: 

  • Post-secondary education in an environmental-related discipline of engineering (e.g., civil, environmental, bio systems engineering).  An equivalent combination of related education, specialized technical training, and experience may also be considered.
  • Approvals Engineer -Experience in water systems engineering including drinking water supply, treatment, storage and distribution systems, and associated assessments.
  • Environmental Engineer -Experience in environmental engineering including manure management, wastewater treatment and disposal, and environmental impact assessments.
  • Ability to read construction plans and learn and work with appropriate industry software tools and technology to successfully complete assignments/projects.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and develop effective working relationships at all levels, including internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with a variety of stakeholders, conveying technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent written communication skills including experience writing various technical documents to support project planning and execution, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to effectively deliver services in a high volume and tight deadline environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, Teams, Access and Outlook.
Desired: 
  • Knowledge of applicable provincial acts and regulations.
  • Knowledge of Workplace Safety and Health work practices.

Duties:

The Approvals Engineer is a specialist engineering position responsible for undertaking highly technical reviews of drinking water systems for compliance with The Drinking Water Safety Act, its regulations and industry standards, determining approval conditions and issuing permits, overseeing compliance with approval conditions, reviewing water system assessments and other technical reports, and inspecting new water system works. On a province-wide basis, the Approvals Engineer provides professional advice as a drinking water specialist to water system owners and operators, consultants, external agencies, senior managers, and other branches and units. The  Environmental Engineer provides engineering advice and technical guidance, inspections, and review of engineering design and construction reports and drawings. The position is responsible for managing and processing applications for approval involving the management of manure and the collection, treatment and disposal of municipal wastewater, to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of the engineering design of the facilities and proposed mitigation measures.
