Northern Lights College is seeking a temporary full-time Associate Dean of Health and Human Services. This position reports to the Dean of Academic and Vocational Programs and is responsible for day-to-day management of the Health and Human Services programs across all Northern Lights College campuses, access centres, and delivery modes. NLC is looking to add someone to our leadership team who sees decision-making as an opportunity for partnership and collaboration in the interest of student experience and success.

Key Areas of Oversight

The Associate Dean will effectively manage health and human services programming across multiple campuses including the unit's day-to-day operations, promote excellence in teaching and pedagogy, and engage with and provide mentorship to faculty, staff, and students.

The preferred candidate has subject matter expertise in one or more of the following program areas: Practical Nursing, Health Care Assistant, Early Childhood Education and Education Assistant. Comprehensive knowledge of post-secondary education in BC, regulated practice and professions, and experience working with regulatory bodies in the health and human services field are essential.

Job Duties & Tasks

In consultation with the Dean of Academic and Vocational Programs, the Associate Dean will:

  • Complete workload assignments for faculty
  • Lead hiring of faculty employees and staff
  • Conduct annual evaluation of faculty employees
  • Work with Chairs, faculty employees, Campus Administrators, and other stakeholders, to schedule classes for assigned area of responsibility
  • Sit on and/or liaise with various program advisory committees, community stakeholder groups, and NLC management committees as assigned
  • Develop new program opportunities and expansion of existing programs
  • Identify funding opportunities and negotiate contracts for assigned programs
  • Oversee program reviews and accreditation processes for assigned programs
  • Participate in modifying, developing, and maintaining educational objectives, goals, strategies, and direction for the division
  • Mentor faculty, staff, and students
  • Participate in developing processes and communications for the division
  • Continue to develop and maintain a learning centered environment
  • Interpret and administer College policies and collective agreements in consultation with appropriate personnel
  • Participate with the VPAR, Dean, Academic and Vocational Programs, and Chairs in the development of departmental budgets
  • Represent the VPAR or Dean and the division at internal and external meetings and committees as required and appropriate
  • Perform other related duties as required

Selection Criteria:

  • The technical requirement for this job would typically be acquired through a Masters in Leadership or six (6) years teaching experience in a health-related and/or human services field; and three (3) years supervisory experience in an unionized environment or equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;
  • Have knowledge of NLC programs, policies, and procedures;
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of relevant Collective Agreements;
  • Have knowledge of quality assurance processes and regulatory requirements for health and human services programs;
  • Have knowledge of provincial post-secondary system;
  • Have knowledge of provincial health and human services training guidelines, practices and processes;
  • Demonstrated success in the development and management of budgets;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including communication, negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead effective teams and demonstrated commitment to collaborative and consultative processes;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with external community, various levels of Government and regulatory bodies;
  • Working knowledge of Project Management processes and strategies
  • Must be able to travel between campuses
