Job Summary
Queen’s University’s Facilities Department’s mission is to proudly build, maintain, and improve campus facilities to create a safe and welcoming environment in support of teaching, learning, and research. The Grounds Operations Team aspires to create and maintain the campus grounds to promote learning, enhance social connections, advance active-living and contribute to overall personal, environmental and community wellbeing. The casual Summer Grounds Assistants play an important role as ambassadors for the university. Their daily contact with students, faculty, staff and visitors helps the university to be a welcoming and friendly place Facilities is now hiring eight (8) casual Summer Grounds Assistants to support our Facilities Grounds Operations Team over the Summer months (May to August, 2024) If you enjoy working outdoors in a physical capacity, have an interest in horticulture, and want to make a difference at one of Canada’s leading post-secondary institutions, then take the first step and apply now! Job Description
Reporting to the Manager, Grounds Operations, the casual Summer Grounds Assistants will assist the Grounds Operations Team to maintain Queen’s Campus grounds making sure they are in good condition and free from related hazards that may affect the safety of the staff, students and visitors who frequent the campus. The successful candidates must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and be able to perform physically demanding work. Candidate success is based on a good work ethic, ability to learn and practice new skills, a willingness to embrace the university’s mission and values and respect diversity and promote inclusion in the workplace Key Responsibilities
  • Work safely in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its applicable regulations as well as adhering to Queen’s and Facilities Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintain the campus grounds by performing duties such as trimming grass, cutting grass with a push lawn mower, pulling weeds, picking up litter, watering, mulching and various other grounds related duties as assigned.
  • Be accountable for timely and effective completion of assigned tasks.
  • Be a positive team member who recognizes the value of diversity in the workplace.
Qualifications
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the job.*
  • Horticultural experience combined with experience safely operating hand-held gardening equipment such as lawn trimmers, leaf blowers, and push lawn mowers, etc., would be considered an asset.
  • Possess a valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and be insurable under the university’s insurance plan, would be considered an asset.
  • The successful candidates will be required to produce a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screen as a condition of employment.
