POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Operations & Maintenance Supervisor, and the technical direction and guidance of the Lead Operator, operates backhoes, excavators and other related equipment within construction and maintenance to excavate and move earth, rock, sand and other materials.

 

MAJOR TASKS:

  1. Operates construction and maintenance equipment within the classification.
  2. Performs float moves of related equipment.
  3. Operates other equipment when required.
  4. Performs labour duties when the operation of equipment is not required.
  5. Inspects, services, and performs minor servicing of equipment being operated.
  6. Reports equipment and material defects as required.
  7. Reports materials used to the stores as required.
  8. Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Experience:

  • Must possess a secondary school graduation diploma

Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be proficient in the operation of large hydraulic excavators and trucks, including but not limited to running grade, proper use of trench boxes, excavator and attachments, and excavation in and around all underground and overhead utilities
  • Must be able to understand water distribution and wastewater collection maps and construction drawings
  • Must be capable of reporting (written or verbal) on sewer and water systems conditions or problems
  • Must be capable of issuing and accurately comprehending written/oral information and instructions
  • Must be tactful and courteous with the public
  • Must be reliable and capable of performing routine work with a minimum of supervision
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class “A” Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent with a ‘Z’ endorsement
  • Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • May be required to provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified)
  • Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)
  • Must work weekends and shifts as required
