Your opportunity: The Department of Molecular Genetics holds a leadership position in Canada and internationally as a premier venue for biomedical and life sciences research and education. We have over 100 faculty members. Our dynamic community of over 350 graduate students is engaged in M.Sc. and Ph.D. Program in Molecular Genetics. We offer a professional M.Sc. in Genetic Counseling as well as M.H.Sc. in Medical Genomics. Futhermore, the department provides a rigorous undergraduate specialist and major in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. Our faculty, fellows, and students are highly acclaimed for pioneering phenomenal advances in some of the most exciting areas of modern science with a profound impact on human health. As Lab Technician, you will be part of a dynamic research environment within a fast- paced lab focused on using state-of-the art laboratory methods. As an integral member of the team, you will support the Roy lab, who focuses on early-stage drug and target discovery as it relates to infectious disease and pests. Relying on your sharp technical and organizational skills, you will conduct collaborative research and coordinate the purchasing and maintenance of supplies. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing laboratory experiments utilizing standardmolecular biology techniques
  • Collecting and interpreting experimental data (including HPLC and LCMS), verifying results and passing on findings; and preparing sample for analyses with HPLC and/or LCMS
  • Ordering and maintaining supplies (as required by lab members), including dealing with vendors and keeping records of invoices
  • Orienting new students to the lab (including ensuring their biosafety training, arranging key cards, ensuring adequate space in the lab to do their work
  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students/employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols
  • Serving as a technical resource on laboratory protocols, and experimental procedures and equipment

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years relevant experience in research laboratory setting
  • Experience performing standardmolecular biology techniques such as DNA cloning, DNA plasmid preparation, electrophoresis, PCR, transformation into yeast (S. cerevisiae), growing cultures of yeast and nematodes, performing genetic crosses with nematodes.
  • Experience with high throughput screening
  • Experience with sample preparation for HPLC and/or LCMS; and using HPLC and/or LCMS instruments and interpreting output
  • Experience with bacterial cloning and bioassays in 96 and/or 384-well plate formats
  • Experience with yeast (S. cerevisiae) and nematode (C. elegans) genetics and culture
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting experimental results, trouble-shooting experiments, and managing conflicting priorities and deadlines
  • Experience with lab purchasing, liaising with vendors, maintaining equipment, tracking and maintaining inventory
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite, and both Windows and Macintosh operating systems
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to exercise initiative and deal effectively with other lab members including experience demonstrating general laboratory procedures to others
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, including task prioritization and record-keeping
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of colleagues
  • Manual dexterity and close attention to detail
  • Must be familiar with basic safe handling of laboratory equipment and chemicals at biological material present in a Biohazard level 1 lab

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:  USW Pay Band 09 -- $60,006 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $76,739. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
