About us: The Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) group, part of the Information Technology Services (ITS) division, is responsible for campus core network, campus wireless, wide area network connectivity and internet connectivity for the University, including connectivity to research and education networks. EIS is also responsible for services related to departmental network management, network, server and storage infrastructure, Windows and Linux servermanagement services, database and application integration and support, enterprise backup service, 24/7 operation of central administrative data centres and telecommunications services. Your opportunity: The Chief Information Officer (CIO) portfolio, operating as Information Technology Services (ITS), employs over 200 IT professionals who provide University-wide IT services and systems to enable University of Toronto (U of T) to maintain its status as Canada’s leading institution of learning, discovery and knowledge creation. From direct support to enterprise-grade academic and administrative applications (student, financial, HR and research) to online learning, information security, collaboration tools and network infrastructure, our work enables U of T’s steadfast commitment to being an internationally significant research university with excellent undergraduate, graduate and professional programs. ITS provides leadership and undertakes strategic and tactical initiatives to secure the greatest value from the University’s investment in IT. By strategically focusing on our people and working in collaboration with academic administrators, process owners and distributed IT service providers, ITS identifies technology opportunities, inefficiencies, and implements services and technology solutions to reduce complexity and improve aggregate IT experience of students, faculty and staff. As a Lead Enterprise Cloud Architect, your role will be to design and plan elements for adoption of our UofT cloud stance, including but not limited to, our Azure presence. Reporting to the Manager of Client Success and Service Delivery, this position will be supporting our partners across the University with design and implementation of services as well as integration of existing services and architecting the services themselves. The Lead Enterprise Cloud Architect will direct the cloud developmentteam to build an efficient and scalable infrastructure for our cloud initiatives. As the architect, you will be an active participant in a larger cross-functional team. This position will help shape the direction through interactions with the Universityleadership, consumers and developers. You will be also responsible for keeping the University current with the emerging cloud technologies. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Optimizing the architecture, design and integration of highly technical and complex enterprise level cloud computing systems
  • Designing and implementing cloud application architecture according to requirements
  • Developing, revising and operationalizing processes that support cloud computing as a deployment model of choice
  • Maintaining ongoing relationships with people whose co-operation is important to the University
  • Defining requirements and scope of complex projects with broad impact and long-term consequences
  • Reconciling business requirements with information architecture needs for highly complex system integration
  • Developing strategic long and short term planning of complex enterprise level systems
  • Acting as an expert resource to developers on architecture, technical standards and coding techniques

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or an acceptable combination of education and experience. A master's degree in a related field is an asset.
  • Minimum eight years of hands-on experience in cloud architecture design and implementation, showcasing comprehensive expertise in support, governance, and domain knowledge of cloud solutions and services. Proficiency in hybrid connectivity, deployment strategies, and operational management within cloud environments is essential.
  • Expertise in Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) and Well-Architected Framework (WAF): Demonstrated proficiency in guiding organizations through the process of adopting cloud technologies while adhering to best practices and architectural principles. Experience evaluating service designs and alternatives to achieve desired balance of performance, risk, and cost.
  • Proven track record in designing, implementing, and managing Azure cloud solutions in large scale environments, encompassing landing zones, on-premises-cloud connectivity, network design, layered security, logging, monitoring, and disaster recovery. Must demonstrate proficiency in designing, configuring, and optimizing cloud services and network connections to meet infrastructure and application service needs effectively.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with Azure Virtual WAN (vWAN) and its associated components, including networking, security, and optimization features.
  • Strong understanding of cloud security principles and best practices, including identity and access management, data protection, and network security.
  • Extensive expertise in cloud services pertaining to Disaster Recovery (DR) and Business Continuity (BC). Demonstrated experience in architecting and implementing application load balancers such as Azure Application Gateway with a focus on disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications, architectures, and designs that effectively guide the development of cloud-based solutions for clients.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the full software development lifecycle, encompassing methodologies, patterns, frameworks, libraries, and tools.
  • Deep understanding of cloud governance models, particularly within the context of university environment is highly desirable, including compliance requirements, security standards, risk management and data governance.
  • Expertise in designing and creating landing zones tailored to meet organizational requirements for secure, scalable, and high performance cloud environments. Familiarity with multi-cloud environments, demonstrating the ability to work with other cloud providers in addition to Azure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills at both a technical and business level, able to build and foster positive relationships with stakeholders. Excellent analytical and problem resolution skills.
  • Proficient in establishing and maintaining productive relationships with cloud service providers, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and fostering collaborative partnerships.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in articulating intricate technical concepts to varied audiences, with a track record of presenting at conferences or comparable forums to highlight architectural solutions and industry best practices.
  • Understanding and practical experience with FinOps principles and practices, including cost optimization strategies and cloud financial management. Experience with tools for cost analysis and forecasting based on usage patterns and business growth.
  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, extending beyond basic scripting, to orchestrate the deployment of cloud resources. Experienced in leveraging automation tools such as ARM templates, Bicep, Terraform, and similar platforms to streamline resource provisioning and configuration.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and tools such as Jenkins or Azure DevOps to automate testing, building, and deploying infrastructure changes using IaC practices.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to lead a team of cloud architects, engineers, and developers effectively, fostering collaboration and driving results.
  • Proficiency with containerization technologies including Docker and Kubernetes, enabling efficient deployment and management of cloud-native application.
  • Demonstrated adaptability to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines. Agile in quickly acquiring, comprehending, and applying new technologies. Strong organizational and time management skills, adept at overseeing multiple projects concurrently.


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert or equivalent certifications in cloud architecture and networking would be advantageous.
  • Deep understanding of ITSM processes and principles, complemented by advanced proficiency in ServiceNow to optimize service delivery workflows and elevate user experiences.
  • TOGAF or similar enterprise architecture certification is a plus.
  • Experience with AI/ML services in Azure.
