WORK ILLUSTRATION:
Reporting to the Director, Integrated Planning and Modernization, the Manager, Engineering (Grid Strategy) is responsible for the effective management of processes and resources for the purpose of establishing and implementing short- and long-term strategies, solutions and operational plans pertaining to the modernization of Toronto Hydro's distribution grid assets and capabilities. This includes facilitating the creation and implementation of Toronto Hydro's grid modernization roadmap and associated planning and operational frameworks in collaboration with program leaders and stakeholders across the organization. It also includes the development and implementation of new digital and analytical tools to support strategic planning, such as long-term demand scenario forecasting. The incumbent is responsible for the review of analysis including market research and engineering work to develop sound, accurate, defensible and executable modernization plans focused on safety and quality, consistent with our licensing requirements and conditions of service. The incumbent is also responsible for leading and/or supporting strategic change initiatives related to the utility's Strategic Asset Management Plan and the Asset Management System, including Toronto Hydro's ISO 55001 alignment initiative.

Toronto Hydro has introduced a Hybrid Work Arrangement. This position allows for remote work up to three days per week, based on business needs. Employees will be required to come onsite on those days when they are involved in activities that they or their leader feel are better conducted in person. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervises a team of technical professionals and students, including engineers, to develop and execute short-term and long-term investment, business and/or technology plans
- Conducts research and studies on technology and engineering trends and assembles the strategic roadmap, with particular emphasis on the modernization of the utility distribution system (e.g. technology, data, software platforms, standards, equipment)
- Makes recommendations for advancements and maintains stakeholder engagements and reporting to drive grid modernization initiatives and strategic planning decisions
- Leads project management and oversight related to the execution of the strategic roadmap and aligns the roadmap to distribution system plans and regulatory filings
- Leads and/or supports the development and implementation of innovation and continuous improvement initiatives to advance the utility's asset management capabilities and strategic asset management plan, including the ISO 55000 alignment initiative
- Reviews engineering work and plans relating to asset plans, capacity planning, system planning, standards, and maintenance to support the establishment of executable work plans with embedded safety and quality operational considerations
- Forecasts work volumes and resourcing; prioritizes and manages work flows to ensure all internal and external deadlines are met
- Accountable for prioritization for project interdependencies, risks, resourcing and project scope and change management
- Oversees the development of evidence and requirements; contributes to the development of accurate and defendable plans and evidence through the development of high-quality business cases in order to obtain approval from various internal and external stakeholders
- Responds to stakeholder requirements and delivers strategic input for inclusion in regulatory filings and other business cases
- Conducts review of processes/systems in engineering area (Grid Modernization; Asset Management System) to ensure continuous improvement in quality/productivity, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to make changes as required
- Ensures data is updated/maintained to be used for the regulatory application and during interrogatories
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred); post graduate degree preferred
- Six (6) years engineering and/or asset management experience, preference to regulated utility engineering experience
- Three (3) years of progressive leadership and/or project leadership experience
- Experience working on strategic initiatives and successfully leading change management in an organization
- Experience in process optimization, designing, mapping and successfully rolling out new initiatives to the organization
- Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario strongly preferred
- PMP designation preferred
- Strong knowledge of best practices for utility engineering planning and asset management best practices
- Strong project management skills
- Strong understanding of the operations within the organization - including knowledge of standards, procurement, maintenance, and system reliability
- Demonstrated knowledge of the electrical distribution system and network settings, including distribution system equipment and related technology
- Ability to interpret analytics, with knowledge of the use of Alteryx and Tableau.
- Knowledge of finance model for capital program - project budget, expenditures, etc.
- Knowledge of process design and optimization practices
