Job Description - Governance and Legal Advisor

Governance and Legal Advisor

Policy and Advocacy Division
Full Time Permanent (Hybrid: 2 days/week in office, 3 days/week WFH)

Target hiring range: $121,515 to $136,704

Background:

The Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) is committed to achieving a high-performing health system and focused on supporting our members and partners in many ways. For almost 20 years, the OHA has supported Ontario’s hospital boards by providing practical, evidence-informed governance resources, highly relevant learning opportunities, and a variety of forums for members to connect on emerging issues.

In 2005, the OHA began providing industry-leading services and educational programs tailored to satisfy every stage of the hospital board trustee lifecycle. The mission has been to support trustees in making meaningful contributions to their organizations and communities by providing them with practical, evidence-informed governance resources, highly relevant educational offerings, and a variety of opportunities to connect on emerging issues and with each other. Today, the hospital governance and statutory compliance environment has become increasingly complex. The OHA remains agile, adapting its governance offerings and engagement opportunities to support evolving needs.

The OHA is looking for an energetic professional with outstanding analysis and communication skills and extensive experience in providing governance leadership, policy and legal advice, and project and change management support for hospital-based governance initiatives. This individual also has solid knowledge of laws, regulations and policies impacting hospitals and the broader healthcare system; and is adept at identifying opportunities to support hospital boards and member hospitals with statutory compliance and risk management.

You are a great listener and your communication style, energy and self-confidence make people want to work with you.  You enjoy the challenge of gathering and synthesizing a range of perspectives and at times, complex options into a results-oriented plan.  You are also skilled at plain-language writing; and in translating complex information into easily comprehensible formats. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, can effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously and you have a strong sense of accountability for your work and the service that you and your team provide to OHA members, your colleagues and the organization.

The Position:

Reporting to the Director, Legal and Regulatory Issues, and working closely with other departments across the OHA:

  • Oversee and manage the development of the OHA’s governance offerings, including resources, tools and knowledge translation opportunities;
  • Monitor provincial and federal legislative/regulatory initiatives; and conducting legislative, policy and case law research to identify hospital compliance and risk management opportunities;
  • Undertake legal analysis and provide advice to assist OHA members and Boards with ongoing and emerging governance and compliance issues;
  • Conduct research, prepare briefing notes, and develop tools and resources for colleagues and member hospitals on hospital compliance and/or broader health system governance issues;
  • Collaborate with members and system partners such as the Ministry of Health, Ontario Health and external law firms on matters affecting hospitals, health system governance, and broader policy; and
  • Provide expertise and support to relevant committees, sub-committees and working groups.

The Candidate:

You have demonstrated knowledge and experience, preferably in the hospital sector related to governance, health system policy, and/or the legal and regulatory framework governing hospitals. You have well developed project and process management skills, and effective leadership and stakeholder management skills.  In addition, you have excellent communication, presentation, facilitation and interpersonal skills. You are a strong team player and can work with and coordinate the efforts of diverse groups of professionals from the health care sector.

A law degree, with relevant demonstrated 3 – 5 years related work experience is required.  Your solid understanding of Ontario’s health care system, including knowledge of the statutory framework governing health care professionals, hospitals, and not-for-profits, would be an advantage in the position.

The ideal candidate is dynamic, positive, collaborative, persuasive, resilient, driven and results-oriented and displays the values of Humility, Discovery, and Passion .

Don’t Meet Every Requirement?
