The work of a Laboratory Assistant, Development is integral to Canadian Blood Services role as Canada’s Lifeline. In this role, you will work with the Supply Chain Process Management team and will provide validation and technology transfer support for organizational strategic projects. The Lab Assistant, Development is responsible for performing routine tasks in the Development Lab blood processing and testing areas. Responsibilities include supporting the planning and effective operation of the respective functions and providing input into the Development Lab documents such as study protocols and final reports. 

 

  Formula for success:

 

  • Supports the planning and effective operation of the Development Lab processing and testing areas. 
  • Performs blood processing and distribution tasks in accordance with establish procedures, study protocols. 
  • Participates in investigations in accordance with established procedures or approved study protocols. 
  • Performs data entry, as required for development studies.
  • Supports the effective operation of the Process Development equipment and supplies.
  • performs equipment monitoring and maintenance.
  • Maintains and restocks supplies required to perform activities as well as chemical inventory and updated MSDS. 
  • Supports the effective operation of the Process Development Space.
  • Carries out procedures according to Operating Procedures or Study Protocols in compliance with GMP requirements.
  • Performs other department related tasks and duties as assigned.

 

Desired education and skills

 

  • Successful completion of a Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12), post-secondary education preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years related experience working in a blood processing or research laboratory.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Excellent skills in planning, organization, critical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work safely and efficiently in a laboratory environment with biological and chemical hazards.
  • Experience with a variety of laboratory methodologies and equipment.
  • Understanding of blood product manufacturing methods.
  • Able to use Microsoft Office.
  • Able to troubleshoot operations and contribute to decision making.



 

 

What you can expect:

 

  • This role works Monday to Friday, typically 0800 - 1600 hours may require flexibility. 
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position, work activities may include using production equipment for extended periods of time. 

  • Work activities may include lifting and carrying of equipment, supplies, collected blood packs, blood and blood products being produced, and shipping containers for short periods of time.

  • Limited travel required. May need to travel to other sites once or twice a year.
